Job Description
Under general guidance, provides leadership, specialized knowledge, and services within the Department of Nursing focusing on clinical education, program oversight, and professional growth. Develops and oversees a wide range of educational initiatives that support the delivery of exceptional patient care and foster the professional advancement of staff. Promotes the professional reputation of the Department of Nursing by effectively marketing superior educational programs both internally and externally, collaborating with professional colleagues in the community, and actively engaging in community outreach efforts.
II. Key Responsibilities and Duties

1. Conducts situational assessments and formulates a strategic plan for clinical education within the Department of Nursing that aligns with the principles and values of service excellence and unit-based professional practice.
2. Develops and administers a thorough clinical education program for the Department of Nursing.
A. Evaluates educational and professional development requirements within the Department of Nursing based on scope of practice, staff development levels, and identified career objectives.
B. Collaborates with clinical and management personnel to design, implement, and assess programs that address identified needs, ensure clinical competency, and support the provision of high-quality clinical services.
C. Determines strategies to ensure staff proficiency regarding new technologies or practice innovations and to facilitate practice or technology changes that enhance outcomes.
D. Acts as an advisor and resource for management and clinical staff in the design, development, and execution of educational programs.
E. Selects clinical instructors, clarifies their roles and responsibilities, assists with the development of content and audiovisual materials, and evaluates both course effectiveness and instructor performance.
F. Develops innovative and practical methods to guarantee accessibility and availability of clinical education programs to staff across all shifts and departments. Identifies approaches to deliver learning experiences, evaluate performance, and document competency that are cost-effective and feasible within the clinical environment.
G. Creates and maintains evaluation methods to monitor program effectiveness, gauge customer needs and feedback, and assess the long-term impact of educational interventions.
3. Provides consultative expertise to support the design and implementation of effective unit-based educational programs tailored to the unique practice specialties and environments of individual units, encouraging staff participation in education and development activities.
4. Designs programs and systems that optimize resource utilization and have potential revenue-generating capabilities. Oversees and controls the education budget in line with established guidelines.
5. Acts as a primary liaison and communication conduit between UMMS, UMCC, and/or STC and affiliated educational institutions to promote collaborative initiatives, develop innovative clinical teaching and learning methods, and create joint projects and proposals.
6. Identifies relevant metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of clinical education activities. Develops and manages systems for data collection, tracking, and reporting, including office automation tools, to monitor progress, evaluate responses, and generate management reports. Designs and maintains evaluation and survey processes to assess educational activity effectiveness and recommends or implements changes as needed.

Work Experience
Education and Experience
1. Master’s degree in Nursing or related field is required. Course work in education is preferred. Individuals matriculating in an accredited masters in nursing or healthcare field program will be considered. If the individual is matriculating through a master’s program, it is expected that the employee will graduate from the program no later than 5 years from the hire date. If the degree is not completed, the employee with be moved to a position in which they meet the education requirements.
2. Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing, is required.
2. Five years clinical experience in nursing, which includes recent experience in an acute care setting is required. One year in a role performing staff education is required. ICU or CCU experience is required for Supplemental Staffing department.
