POSITION SUMMARY

The Adjunct Faculty – Oral Communication Instructor teaches communication courses that support the general education and professional competency requirements of the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program. The instructor focuses on developing students’ oral, interpersonal, and professional communication skills essential for safe and effective nursing practice. Instruction aligns with institutional policies, California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) standards, and accreditation requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach Oral Communication courses (e.g., interpersonal communication, public speaking, or professional communication) in accordance with approved curriculum and learning outcomes.
  • Deliver engaging, student-centered instruction through lectures, presentations, group discussions, and interactive activities.
  • Emphasize communication skills relevant to nursing practice, including:
    • Therapeutic communication
    • Patient and family education
    • Interdisciplinary team communication
    • Conflict resolution and cultural competence
  • Develop and maintain course syllabi, lesson plans, assignments, and evaluation tools in alignment with institutional guidelines.
  • Assess student performance fairly and consistently; provide timely, constructive feedback.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student progress in compliance with college policies.
  • Utilize instructional technology and the learning management system (LMS) for course delivery and communication.
  • Foster an inclusive learning environment that supports diverse learners and promotes professionalism.
  • Provide academic support to students through office hours or scheduled assistance.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, curriculum development, and professional development activities as assigned.
  • Uphold academic integrity and adhere to all institutional, regulatory, and accreditation standards.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Strong knowledge of communication theory and practice, including interpersonal, group, and public communication.
  • Ability to relate communication concepts to healthcare and nursing environments.
  • Effective classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle).
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to engage and support a diverse student population.
  • Commitment to student success, equity, and academic excellence.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in communication, Speech, Rhetoric, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution, OR
  • Master’s degree in another discipline with at least 18 graduate semester units in Communication or a related field.
