At eBay, we’re more than a global ecommerce leader. We’re changing the way the world shops and sells. Our platform empowers millions of buyers and sellers in more than 190 markets around the world. We’re committed to pushing boundaries and reinventing the future of ecommerce for enthusiasts.

The Foundation Models team is at the forefront of this transformation. We are building next-generation Generative AI and foundation-model capabilities that power intelligent experiences across eBay at global scale. From advanced retrieval systems to multimodal understanding, our work directly shapes how customers discover, evaluate, and engage with inventory across the marketplace.

We are seeking a Machine Learning Engineer to join our Foundation Models team as an individual contributor. In this role, you will contribute to building, evaluating, and deploying machine learning and Generative AI systems for large-scale ecommerce applications. You will work with applied researchers, senior engineers, and product partners to help bring AI capabilities from experimentation into reliable production systems.

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone with strong machine learning fundamentals, good software engineering skills, and a desire to build practical AI systems at scale.

This is an opportunity to:

  • Develop and improve machine learning and Generative AI capabilities for large-scale ecommerce applications

  • Build components involving LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, multimodal models, ranking, personalization, and agentic workflows

  • Contribute to learning systems that improve from feedback signals, such as preference learning, reward modeling, bandits, and online/offline feedback loops

  • Work with applied researchers and senior engineers to turn prototypes and experiments into reliable production components

  • Build and maintain training, fine-tuning, evaluation, and deployment pipelines for machine learning models

  • Support improvements to model quality, latency, reliability, observability, and operational performance in production environments

  • Work with large-scale structured and unstructured data, including text, image, behavioral, and marketplace inventory data

  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and platform teams to integrate AI capabilities into eBay experiences

  • Apply good software engineering practices, including code quality, testing, monitoring, documentation, and operational excellence

  • Contribute to structured experimentation, A/B testing, and measurement of customer and business impact

Qualifications

  • Master’s, PhD, or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computational Linguistics, or a related field, typically with 4+ years of relevant work experience

  • Hands-on experience developing machine learning models or machine learning-enabled software systems

  • Good understanding of machine learning, NLP, Large Language Models, embeddings, retrieval, ranking, recommender systems, or multimodal modeling

  • Experience with model training, fine-tuning, evaluation, deployment, or performance optimization

  • Exposure to reinforcement learning or feedback-driven learning systems, such as preference learning, reward modeling, bandits, or continuous model improvement loops

  • Strong programming skills in Python and experience with modern ML frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or similar

  • Experience with data processing, cloud infrastructure, databases, distributed systems, or model-serving platforms

  • Good software engineering skills and familiarity with production engineering practices

  • Ability to work independently on clearly scoped technical tasks and collaborate effectively on larger projects

  • Good communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across research, engineering, product, and platform teams

  • Previous publications, patents, open-source contributions, or technical blogs are a plus
