Overview
The Research Assistant 2, MS supports specific basic science research efforts by performing defined technical and/or experimental tasks in the laboratory. Responsibilities include breeding, providing care and husbandry support, performing surgical tasks for research animals, and acquiring, collecting, inputting, and reporting research data. The role involves carrying out routine laboratory procedures such as DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, cell culture, and protein purification. The Research Assistant also supports general laboratory maintenance for safety, operations, and security, ensures compliance with established protocols, and provides training and mentorship to students and new lab members.

Required Skills and Abilities
1. Proven ability to perform basic laboratory techniques such as cell culture, PCR, and protein purification.
2. Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects.
3. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
4. Demonstrated ability to interpret complex policies and procedures, and to work in a regulated laboratory environment.
5. Experience with handling laboratory animals, including administering anesthesia and monitoring for signs of distress.

Preferred Skills and Abilities
1. Bachelor's degree in a related field and two years of laboratory experience.
2. Experience with Next Generation Sequencing and data analysis techniques.
3. Knowledge of molecular biology techniques and prior experience with lab automation.
4. Familiarity with regulatory compliance for laboratory safety and hazardous materials.
5. Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and laboratory management software.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Researches and collects data through complex laboratory/scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for research projects. Interprets, synthesizes, and analyzes data using scientific or statistical techniques. 2. Modifies and plans research experiments, procedures, tests, or survey instruments. Assists in research design. Writes and edits material for publication and presentation. Reports on status of research activities. 3. Oversees and instructs research and support staff on technical procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory maintenance. Schedules and coordinates research activities. Sets up, operates, and maintains laboratory equipment and apparatus. Modifies equipment according to experimental specifications. 4. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. May monitor hazardous work areas and laboratory safety. Prepares related reports. May prepare financial information and monitor budgets. 5. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities. Required Education and Experience Two years of related work experience in the same job family and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
