About the Diversion & Intervention Services Department

We partner with law enforcement and courts to equip officers and court staff with the tools, education, and strategies to respond effectively to individuals experiencing mental health challenges. Our work helps prevent unnecessary arrests, court cases, and hospitalizations—empowering both professionals and the people they serve.

What You’ll Do

  • Connect youth with co-occurring mental health, substance use, and/or developmental needs to appropriate community-based services.
  • Build and strengthen partnerships across behavioral health providers, schools, courts, and community agencies to improve youth outcomes.
  • Support diversion from hospitalization, detention, and residential placements by promoting family- and community-based care.
  • Collaborate with crisis intervention teams, including ACI and law enforcement, to assess and coordinate care for youth in crisis.
  • Monitor client needs, respond to symptom escalation, and provide education on symptom management.
  • Facilitate a monthly evening recovery group through Lee’s Summit Youth Court.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic medical record system.
  • Partner with internal multidisciplinary teams to coordinate care and support overall client wellness.

Requirements of the Position

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Social Science-related field.
  • Must meet the Missouri Department of Mental Health criteria for Community Support Specialist.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with youth with mental health disorders, substance use disorders, or developmental disabilities.
  • A valid automobile driver’s license, appropriate automobile insurance, and a safe, reliable, registered automobile available for use during work.
  • Working knowledge of mental illness and substance use disorders.
  • Excellent customer service skills with a recovery focus.
  • Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills in typing/keyboarding, Microsoft Word and Excel programs as well as email.
