Job Description
JOB SUMMARY: Transports, loads/unloads, inspects, maintains, and repairs marine survival equipment such as lift rafts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Inspects and transports life rafts and fire/safety equipment between vessels and inspection stations.
- Boards vessel and identifies self and purpose of visit to captain, mate or engineer.
- Locates and inspects rafts and/or other lifesaving/fire equipment.
- Reads and records data on quality control sheet such as last inspection date, pressure gauge reading, integrity of raft containers, etc.
- Identifies rafts/equipment in need of further inspection and service.
- Documents equipment to be removed from vessel and reviews information with captain, mate or engineer.
- Transports and loads equipment to/from vehicle, vessel and/or inspection station.
- Secures load in vehicle in accordance with company and government regulations for safe transport.
- May reinstall rafts in vessel following safety directives and procedures.
- Uses hand and power tools and hand truck as needed.
- Receives raft container at ground level warehouse dock.
- Attaches overhead crane from second level to container on truck and raises to floor level onto four-wheel dolly.
- Pushes to storage area.
- Transports raft from warehouse storage to repair room.
- Pushes raft container on four-wheel roller dolly into repair room.
- Removes raft from container.
- Opens container at clamps.
- Inspects container.
- Lifts raft from container and spreads raft onto repair room floor.
- Removes equipment pack from raft.
- Removes C02 cylinder using hand tools to dissemble and reassemble cylinder and hoses.
- Repairs container.
- Repair vessels, rubber tubes and/or raft containers using various materials and chemicals such as fiberglass, hardeners and hand and power tools.
- Inspects raft by air inflation.
- Inflates raft using pressurized air hose.
- Determines repair needs of raft.
- Deflates raft.
- Inspects raft with water/weight test.
- Places bladder in raft.
- Attaches water hose to bladder and engages electric pump to pump and fill bladder.
- Attaches overhead crane to raft.
- Lifts raft with crane and allows raft to hang under weight for designated periods of time.
- Observes that raft has met designated weight standard.
- Patches raft.
- Determines patching material and glue/adhesive type to complete repair.
- Cleans area to be patched with cleaning and adhesive agents.
- Applies patch to readied area as per repair process specifications.
- Tests repair to assure conformance to specifications.
- Replaces equipment onto raft.
- Reassembles gas cylinder, installs battery powered lights, signaling apparatus, flashlights, batteries, food, water and first aide depending upon type of raft and supply necessity.
- Adheres decals onto raft noting up, down, type, procedures, and safety.
- Refolds and repacks raft into raft container.
- Clamps container.
- Utilizes hand tools such as wrenches, vice grip clamps, scissors, wire cutters, and compressed air to assemble and disassemble raft contents and uses cleaning agents, solvents, and adhesives to make patch repairs.
- Completes raft recertification checklist.
- Rolls raft container into storage area.
- Cleans water tank.
- Drains tank.
- Sprays soap and water solution into tank.
- Refills tank with water, drains and replenishes with fresh water.
- Refills C02 cylinders.
- Stands cylinder onto fixture containing chain vice.
- Secures cylinder with chain.
- Checks and/or replaces cylinder valves and hoses.
- Fills cylinder from pressurized hose and places on scale to check weight.
- Utilizes hand tools such as wrenches, pipe wrenches, hacksaws, pliers, screwdrivers, etc. to repair cylinders.
- Operates rotary wire brush and grinding wheel.
- Returns cylinder to storage area either by lift and carry or handcart.
- Completes documentation pertaining to cylinder repairs completed.
- May operate industrial lift truck.
- Other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
