Description
The Lead Researcher and Series Editor oversees the development and publication of the “Trouble the Land” series for Southern Spaces, a multi-media journal project examining the history of the civil rights movement in five cities of the US South. This role provides intellectual and organizational leadership, coordinating collaborative work among the journal’s senior editor and graduate student staff to ensure high-quality, historically rigorous, and engaging scholarship.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serve as lead researcher and series editor for the “Trouble the Land” multi-media article series.
- Coordinate and manage collaboration among the Southern Spaces senior editor and graduate student editorial and research staff.
- Conduct original historical research and curate archival and multimedia materials relevant to the civil rights movement in the cities Atlanta, Columbia, Little Rock, Jackson, and Montgomery.
- Identify, evaluate, and secure intellectual property and usage rights for images, audio, video, and other media.
- Oversee and manage the project budget, ensuring responsible allocation of resources.
- Guide editorial development, ensuring scholarly accuracy, narrative coherence, and effective integration of multimedia content.
- Conduct archival research, including on-site research as needed.
- Travel out of town as required to access archives, collections, and participate as needed in project-related meetings and events.
- Manages the writing, editing, production and distribution of publications and periodicals for specific audiences and schools of the university.
- Writes and/or edits copy ensuring compliance with university editorial and visual identity standards.
- Researches current events and interviews sources for stories. Establishes production schedules to meet publication dates.
- Provides graphic design support for publication projects and monitors new developments in electronic communications, and selects visuals to accompany articles, such as photographs or illustrations, and works collaboratively with the art director, photographers, and editor to obtain or assign them as needed.
- Recruits and supervises freelance writers and interns.
- Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor's degree in communications, journalism or a related field AND five years of experience as an editor or an equivalent combination of directly related training and experience.
NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
