Job Description
The Field Testing Technician plays a critical role in supporting the Vehicle Engineering team through real-world testing, data collection, and validation of diagnostic software solutions. This position works closely with software and vehicle engineers to gather vehicle information, perform testing, capture logs, and help validate new diagnostic features and functionality across a wide range of diesel vehicle platforms.
The ideal candidate is technically skilled in diesel diagnostics, comfortable working independently in the field, and professional when interacting with partner repair shops and customers. This role involves regular travel to partner locations, hands-on vehicle diagnostics, and collaboration with engineering teams to improve software quality and functionality.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform field testing and quality validation of diagnostic software on diesel vehicles and equipment.
- Work directly with Vehicle Engineering and software development teams to gather diagnostic data, reproduce issues, and validate software fixes.
- Travel regularly to partner repair facilities and customer locations to collect vehicle information, logs, and testing data.
- Operate diagnostic software and communication hardware on a variety of diesel vehicle platforms.
- Assist engineers with troubleshooting vehicle communication, diagnostic, and software-related issues.
- Capture and document test procedures, results, issues, and findings in an organized and detailed manner.
- Use task management and collaboration tools such as Jira to track assignments, testing progress, and reported issues.
- Maintain professional relationships with partner shops and customers while representing the company in the field.
- Manage daily operation and upkeep scheduling of assigned company vehicle.
- Coordinate and prioritize testing assignments with minimal supervision.
- Support product demonstrations, conventions, trade shows, and customer visits as needed.
- Provide feedback to engineering teams regarding usability, performance, and real-world application of diagnostic tools and software.
- Maintain accurate records using Microsoft Word, Excel, and other company systems.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Strong understanding of diesel vehicle systems and diagnostics.
- Familiarity with major diesel vehicle component systems including engines, transmissions, aftertreatment, and communication networks.
- Experience using OEM and/or aftermarket diagnostic software platforms.
- Understanding of vehicle diagnostic communication protocols and troubleshooting processes.
- Ability to work independently and manage field assignments with minimal supervision.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with partner shops and customers.
- Basic computer proficiency including Microsoft Word, Excel, and task management software such as Jira.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
- Willingness to travel frequently within the region and occasionally for extended trips, conventions, or customer visits.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in Off highway equipment diesel repair, On highway fleet maintenance, dealership service, or diagnostic support environments.
- Familiarity with J1939, J1708, CAN communication, or related vehicle communication systems.
- Previous experience supporting or testing technical software products.
- Basic understanding of software development or software testing processes.
- Experience documenting technical findings and reproducing issues for engineering teams.
Work Environment & Travel
- Based primarily out of the Columbia South Carolina training facility.
- Frequent local and regional travel to partner repair shops and customer locations.
- Occasional overnight travel for conventions, training events, or customer visits.
- Combination of office, shop, and field environments.
- Primarily autonomous work with regular coordination alongside engineering staff.
