Job purpose
The Electrician / Controls Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of electrical, automation, and control systems supporting pharmaceutical manufacturing, packaging, and utilities.
This role ensures equipment reliability, regulatory compliance, and minimal downtime in a GMP‑regulated environment through strong electrical, PLC, instrumentation, and process control expertise.
Duties and responsibilities
- Facility electrical services
Install, maintain, and troubleshoot industrial electrical systems up to 600 VAC, in accordance with local electrical codes and safety regulations
Support power distribution, lighting, emergency power, and building utility electrical systems
Troubleshoot electrical faults on production, packaging, HVAC, and utility equipment
Perform electrical installations, modifications, and upgrades following approved drawings and change controls
- PLC Controls
Troubleshoot and support PLC‑based control systems (Allen‑Bradley, Siemens, Schneider/Elau, Omron)
Interpret electrical schematics, PLC I/O layouts, control narratives, and network diagrams
Support HMIs, SCADA systems, and machine interfaces
Perform basic PLC logic edits and parameter changes under approved change control (as permitted by site procedures)
- Instrumentation Controls
Maintain and troubleshoot process instrumentation (pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical sensors)
Support PID control loops, control valves, actuators, and pneumatic systems
Perform loop checks, functional testing, and instrument calibration per SOPs
Ensure control systems operate within validated parameters
- Preventive & Corrective Maintenance
Execute scheduled preventive maintenance on electrical and control systems
Investigate root causes of electrical or automation failures and recommend corrective actions
Participate in equipment overhauls and reliability improvement initiatives
Minimize downtime through systematic troubleshooting and repairs
- Installation, Commissioning & Validation
Support installation, FAT/SAT, commissioning, and validation of new equipment and systems
Transition equipment from vendor commissioning to in‑house maintenance ownership
Support changes under formal change control to maintain validated state
Work closely with Engineering, QA, Operations, and external vendors
- GMP, Safety & Documentation
Adhere to all safety rules and report hazards, incidents, or near misses
Complete work orders, calibration records, and GMP documentation accurately and on time
Participate in deviations, investigations, CAPAs, and change controls
Support internal, customer, and regulatory audits
- Calibration
Perform timely calibration on instruments as specified in the various calibration SOPs.
Ensure all associated calibration documents, tags, and work orders are completed
- On‑Call & Operational Support
Participate in a rotating 24/7 on‑call schedule for electrical and controls support
Support scheduled and unscheduled overtime, including weekends if required
Additional responsibility (Only applicable to customer facing roles)
Report any adverse event received from customers for company products to the pharmacovigilance department / Drug Safety on the same day or within 1 business day
Qualifications
Licensed Industrial Electrician (or equivalent trade certification)
- Minimum 5 years of industrial maintenance experience, preferably in pharmaceutical or regulated manufacturing
- Demonstrated hands on experience with:
- Industrial electrical systems
- PLC based automation
- Instrumentation and PID control loops
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, control schematics, and P&IDs
Background and Experience
- Experience working in a GMP / CGMP environment
- Automation or Controls diploma / certification
- Experience with packaging, process, or utilities equipment
- Knowledge of data integrity principles and validated systems
- Industrial Electrical license(442A) or any trade equivalent certification
Problem Solving
High level of problem-solving ability required as systems will be complex, i.e. will involve integrated PLC’s and equipment control systems
Working conditions
- At times a requirement to work in “tight spaces” to repair problems.
- A requirement to be sitting, standing, bending, squatting and walking throughout the day.
- Some heavy lifting may be required (above 75lbs.)
- Unless required the position will be considered a day shift position.
- Some overtime may be required, this may be both week-day and/or week-end work.
- Some “call-in” situations may arise.
- GMP garments required to be worn within the manufacturing environment.
