SUPERVISOR OF SCHOOL NUTRITION PROGRAMS


Primary Function

The Supervisor of School Nutrition Programs oversees and leads the division's comprehensive school nutrition services to ensure safe, nutritious, and appealing meals for students. This position ensures full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations; manages program operations, budgets, and contracts; and provides leadership, training, and oversight to support high-quality nutrition services across all schools.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree with an academic major or area of concentration in food and nutrition, food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field OR a bachelor's degree with any academic major or area of concentration and a State-recognized certificate for school nutrition directors OR a bachelor's degree in any major and at least five years of experience in management of school nutrition programs
  • Completed at least eight hours of food safety training within five years prior to hire or complete at least eight hours of food safety training within 30 calendar days of hire
  • Valid Virginia driver's license
  • At least one year of management experience, preferably in school nutrition, is preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Expert knowledge of federal and state regulations related to the National School Lunch Program and National School Breakfast Program, meal patterns, administrative and procurement reviews, and offer-versus-serve requirements
  • Demonstrated financial management and ability to operate a large, multi-site enterprise.
  • Strong food safety expertise
  • Proficiency with nutrition/point of sale software
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, school personnel, and members of the community

Performance Responsibilities

  • Serve as the liaison with the division's contracted food service management company
  • Supervise the Manager of School Food Services
  • Administer, monitor, and continuously improve all child nutrition programs to meet United States Department of Agriculture, Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), and division requirements, including meal pattern compliance, civil rights, administrative review readiness, on-site accountability reviews, eligibility verification, Community Eligibility Provision applications, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program
  • Attends all VDOE supervisor/director meetings and relevant trainings/webinars
  • Conduct site visits of all school kitchens at least monthly to review operations, safety, sanitation, and customer service
  • Lead division-wide compliance with Virginia competitive food regulations, coordinating with principals/wellness policy designees on non-School Nutrition Program sales, recordkeeping, and monitoring
  • Develop and manage the annual School Nutrition budget; analyze participation, revenue, and food/labor cost; implement cost controls to maintain the required balance in the food service account
  • Oversee claims for reimbursement, free/reduced-price meal application processes (or direct certification/CEP as applicable), and ensure accurate, timely reporting to VDOE
  • Direct compliant procurement of goods and equipment
  • Collaborate with Finance staff for monthly claims and reporting
  • Coordinate kitchen equipment planning for new kitchen construction/renovations
  • Coordinate with Information Technology staff regarding point-of-sale system, free/reduced meal application platform, and inventory/production software
  • Design and deliver manager/staff training
  • Provide timely information to school administrative teams and division leaders regarding relevant school nutrition policies and expectations
  • Lead the Request for Proposal and contract renewal/amendment processes related to the contracted food service management company
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Type: Exempt

Reports to: Associate Director of Student Services � Elementary

Terms of Employment: Twelve months a year. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan.

Evaluation: Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of administrative personnel.
