Job Description

Position: School Counselor or Social Worker

Reports To: Principal
Director of Student Services


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with:
  • School Social Work (SSW) endorsement
  • Master's Degree Social Work or Master's Degree School Counseling

 
OBJECTIVES
Under the supervision of the building principal and the Director of Student Services, the Social Worker will help both special and general education students resolve personal, emotional and social problems that interfere with their adjustment to school and their capacity to enjoy the fullest benefits of the education offered them.
 
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Attends to crisis situations (e.g. child abuse, acute, chronic, and severe behavior problems, substance abuse, suicide, death, attendance, runaway, etc.).
  2. Maintains and respects confidentiality of students and staff.
  3. Completes the social developmental study for a case study evaluation (i.e. child interview, family interview, adaptive behavior assessment, classroom teach consultation and observation, review of permanent and temporary file, functional assessment, behavior intervention plan.
  4. Serves as director's liaison regarding the rules and regulations governing the special education decision-making process: screening, assessment, eligibility, and placement options.
  5. Serves as leader of the Student Based Assistance Team
  6. Evaluates and participates in determining student eligibility for special education placement and school social work services.
  7. Participates in 3-5-year-old screenings.
  8. Delivers direct and or consultative social work services as indicated on the IEP.
  9. Works with and communicates regularly with parents as needed during school hours.
  10. Serves as an advocate for students.
  11. Monitors and provides for behavioral interventions of regular and special education students.
  12. Assisting teachers with behavior management.
  13. Assists the team to understand the student, his/her in school and out-of-school behavior, and how the many environments influences the student for purposes of educational planning.
  14. Assist with mental health concerns, behavioral concerns, positive behavioral support, academic, and classroom support, consultation with teachers, parents, and administrators as well as provide individual and group counseling/therapy.

The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. The employee must frequently lift and/or move from 10 to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
