Job Description

Summary:

The School Nurse serves as a bridge between health care and education. The

nurse provides student centered care, guided by the principles of care

coordination, leadership, quality improvement, and community/public health

while employing evidence based, quality care. The school nurse's goal is to help

every student be healthy, safe, and ready to learn. ("NASN Framework for 21st

Century Nursing Practice", 2016).

Assumes responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention,

evaluation, management, and referrals with regards to student health.

Responsible for direct and indirect care given to students in compliance with

school district policies, professional standards of practice, physicians' orders

and written care plans.

Provides for the promotion and maintenance of health as well as the

prevention of illness and injury.

Functions in accordance with the school district's policies and procedures and

the Montana Nurse Practice Act and Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduate of a board certified School of Nursing

Must hold a current valid nursing license in the state of MT

Current certificate of CPR (BLS accepted) and knowledge of first aid.

 

DUTIES:

Responsible for the formulation, revision, and implementation of Individualized Health

Plans and Emergency Care Plans.

Administer prescription, over the counter, and emergency medications. Must also supervise,

monitor, teach and delegate these procedures in accordance with GFPS Policies and MT BON

rules.

Provides for the promotion and maintenance of health as well as the prevention of illness

and injury.

Delegate medical procedures to unlicensed personnel in accordance with the MT BON

delegation rules. Maintain appropriate records and evaluation.

Acts as a liaison between the physician, school, community, and child's home in

accommodating and improving holistic health needs of school children.

Demonstrates competence in ability to perform nursing assessments for acute and chronic

health conditions.

Implements evidence based practice in accordance with district guidelines.

Provides school-based case management for students with health conditions.

Carries out daily medical interventions in accordance with GFPS Nursing Department

protocols.

Exercise professional nursing judgement and follow GFPS policies and protocols regarding

disposition of students who become ill or injured at school.

Participates as appropriate with education team members in development and/or review of

Individualized Education Plans or 504 plans.

Upholds regulations and the laws related to confidentiality, reporting of child abuse and

neglect, and other health related requirements (i.e. communicable disease).

Respects the dignity, confidentiality, and rights of all students and staff in accordance with

HIPPA/FERPA.

Provides leadership in the planning of proper emergency care and first aid for sudden

illnesses and accidents incurred during school hours.

Assists with monitoring immunization compliance.

Ensures the maintenance of accurate nursing records, including Medicaid charting and

billing.

Provides in-service training for health related issues to staff members.

Maintains professional competencies through self-selected professional growth/continuing

education programs.

 

 

EMPLOYMENT: 180 day school year

LOCATION: District-wide

SALARY: Based upon experience and education
