Job Description

Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) provides strategic leadership and oversight of all financial and business operations of Florence Unified School District. In collaboration with the Superintendent and Assistant Director of Finance, the CFO ensures fiscal integrity, transparency, and compliance while maximizing available resources to support high-quality educational programs.

The CFO serves as a key member of the Superintendent's leadership team and plays a central role in long-range financial planning, policy development, and organizational decision-making.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

District Leadership & Governance

  • Serve as a member of the Superintendent's executive leadership team
  • Prepare and recommend Board policies, administrative procedures, and financial practices
  • Attend Governing Board meetings and official district functions as directed
  • Chair and participate in committees as assigned
  • Ensure alignment of financial operations with Board policy and district goals
  • Uphold and monitor contractual agreements; recommend revisions as needed
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, and presentations for the Superintendent and Governing Board

Budget Development & Oversight

  • Lead development and administration of the district's annual budget
  • Recommend budget priorities aligned with instructional and operational goals
  • Establish and monitor cost control procedures
  • Provide ongoing budget analysis and financial forecasts
  • Facilitate budget revisions as directed by the state.
  • Play an integral role in the selection and oversight of the District benefits package in unison with the Assistant Superintendent.

Accounting, Reporting & Compliance

  • Establish and maintain accounting systems and internal controls to ensure accuracy and transparency
  • Oversee preparation of all required financial reports, including:
    • Annual Financial Report
    • Debt Reporting
    • Tax Credit Reporting
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, including Arizona school finance regulations
  • Coordinate and oversee annual audits and implement corrective actions as needed

 

Legal & Risk Management

  • Monitor financial and contractual legal matters affecting the district
  • Advise the Superintendent on legal and financial risks
  • Ensure compliance with statutes, case law, and regulatory requirements
  • Oversee the District's risk management via liability insurance and workers compensation insurance.

Procurement & Operations

  • Oversee purchasing, contract management, and vendor relations
  • Ensure competitive, compliant procurement practices
  • Support financial oversight of capital projects and facilities planning

 

Department Leadership

  • Provide supervision and leadership to finance staff and assigned administrators
  • Oversee the District Warehouse employees and functions.
  • Oversee the District Food Services Director and operations.
  • Conduct evaluations and support professional growth
  • Foster collaboration, communication, and accountability across departments

 

Professional Development

  • Stay current on school finance, legislation, and best practices
  • Participate in professional organizations and ongoing training
  • Collaborate with other districts and agencies to share effective practices

Equipment

Travel Requirements

Limited travel to and from meetings may be required. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to attend School Board meetings, public hearings, or other events.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
  • Master's degree in Educational Administration or related field (preferred)
  • Demonstrated successful experience in school business administration (preferred)
  • Knowledge of Arizona school finance laws and federal regulations

 

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible financial leadership experience preferred
  • Prior CFO or senior-level school finance experience preferred

 

Clearances

  • Measles/Mumps/Rubella Immunity/Vaccination
  • Valid I-9 form
  • AZ Department of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card

 

Working Environment: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands; the employee is frequently required to sit; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

Terms of Employment 

Salary commensurate with education and experience for this position

12 month position

Evaluation : Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the site administration in accordance with Governing Board Policy.
