Job Description

FOR THIS TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT, STATE LAW REQUIRES A NATIONAL AND STATE CRIMINAL HISTORY BACKGROUND CHECK AND LETTER FROM THE CABINET FOR HEALTH AND FAMILY SERVICES STATING THE EMPLOYEE IS CLEAR TO HIRE BASED ON NO FINDINGS OF SUBSTANTIATED CHILD ABUSE OR NEGLECT FOUND THROUGH A BACKGROUND CHECK OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT RECORDS MAINTAINED BY THE CABINET FOR HEALTH AND FAMILY SERVICES AS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT.

POSITION: MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND DIRECTOR
 
POSITION SUMMARY:

  • To provide and maintain an instrumental music program that meets the needs of the school

 
SUPERVISORY
RELATIONSHIP:

  • Reports to Principal and Director of Bands

 
QUALIFICATIONS/
REQUIREMENTS:

  • Kentucky Department of Education teaching certification for Instrumental Music
  • Experience and other qualifications the superintendent, principal, or Director of Bands may find acceptable

 
PERFORMANCE
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and implement a comprehensive instrumental music program that includes beginning, intermediate, and advanced band classes.
     
  • Develop and maintain a sequential curriculum aligned with district, state, and national music education standards.
     
  • Select appropriate repertoire for skill development and performance that supports musical growth and student engagement.
     
  • Prepare students for performances, including concerts, assessments, parades, and other school or community events.
     
  • Organize and conduct rehearsals to effectively prepare students for public performances and evaluations.
     
  • Plan all band-related events and performances with detailed itineraries and submit them to the principal in advance for approval.
     
  • Maintain and manage a program budget, including tracking expenses, submitting purchase orders, and making fiscally responsible decisions.
     
  • Manage all aspects of instrument inventory, sheet music, uniforms, and equipment, including maintenance and organization.
     
  • Create and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages musical and personal growth.
     
  • Recruit and retain students in the band program through engaging outreach efforts in elementary schools and within the middle school.
     
  • Collaborate with other music faculty, including the high school band director, to ensure program alignment and vertical integration.
     
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, expectations, schedules, and events.
     
  • Coordinate transportation, logistics, and supervision for off-campus events, performances, and trips.
     
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, inventory, and performance assessments.
     
  • Participate in professional development and stay informed about best practices in music education and pedagogy.
     
  • Fulfill school duties and responsibilities as assigned by the principal, including supervision, duties, or school events.
     
  • Adhere to all school, district, and state policies and procedures related to instruction, student behavior, and safety.
     
  • Foster a culture of excellence, respect, and responsibility within the band program.
     

 
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • $1500 stipend
  • 185-day employee with salary determined by the adopted co-curricular salary schedule of the Christian County Board of Education

 
EVALUATION:

  • Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy of Evaluation of Certified Personnel.
