Director of Accounting


Job Title:Director of Accounting
Reports To:Controller
Classification:Administrative
Wage/Hour Status:Exempt

Salary:See Compensation Plan for Administrative/Professional Pay Plan, Pay Grade 109
Contract:Non-Chapter 21

Primary Purpose:Direct the accounting, payroll, and payables functions. Ensure that financial records are kept in accordance with applicable statute, regulation, and generally accepted accounting principles. Provide for accurate recording and reporting of district financial operations. 
Qualifications/Skills:

Education/Certification:

  • Certified Public Accountant preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business or comparable field
  • TASBO certification preferred.

Experience:

  • Seven or more years experience with progressing job duties in accounting and financial reporting positions to include two or more years managing personnel.
  • Texas school district experience is strongly preferred.


Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of governmental accounting and the TEA Financial Accountability Systems Resource Guide.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP.
Major Duties and
Responsibilities:

Accounting:

  • Assist auditors with the preparation of the District's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.
  • Coordinate the District's interim and year-end audit.
  • Administer fiscal year end close process.
  • Responsible for financial reporting including PEIMS actual financial data.
  • Reconcile and analyze general ledger accounts.
  • Approve and post journal entries.
  • Direct payroll
  • Direct accounts payable
  • Maintain documented financial procedures to include internal controls that ensure compliance with applicable law regulation and policy, safe guarding of assets, and accurate financial reporting.

Personnel Management: 

  • Manage accounting, payroll, accounts payable and campus finance staff .
  • Hire, develop and retain effective team members.
  • Provide regular performance feedback and evaluation to team members to ensure effective performance.

Other:

  • Maintain confidential information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Controller or Associate Superintendent for Finance.
Supervisory
Responsibilities:
Supervise and evaluate staff.
Equipment Used:Computer and various office equipment.
Working Conditions:

Mental Demands:

  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Work with frequent interruptions.
  • This position requires regular in-person interaction with the public.

Physical Demands:

  • Repetitive hand motions.
  • Prolonged use of the computer.
