Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program at assigned campus. Counsel students to fully develop each student’s academic, career, personal, and social abilities and address the needs of special population students. Deliver guidance curriculum in various group sizes. Educate students of skills necessary to address troublesome circumstances, support students in challenging situations, and assist students with needed resources to navigate crisis situations.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:
Master’s degree in counseling from an accredited college or university
Valid Texas school counselor certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development
Possess excellent organizational and communication skills; written and oral
Ability to interact successfully with students, parents, staff and community
Knowledge of curriculum at assigned level
Knowledge of available and appropriate community agencies and resources
Ability to work with students in crisis on a one to one basis
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Ability to present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students,
parents or guardians, and district staff

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and works with students in evolving education and occupation plans in terms of such evaluation.
  2. Assist in upholding and school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policy.
  3. Ability to provide students with the counseling they need to plan an educational path that will qualify and lead student(s) to choose or achieve their desired career.
  4. Develop long-term and short-range plans for a complete guidance program for the students assigned based on the needs and expectations of the populations to be served.
  5. Track student's progress to ensure they service the necessary assistance and remain focused on obtaining the best education the school district can provide.
  6. The counselor is responsible for providing a complete program of guidance services for the school(s) assigned.
  7. Assist with the district-testing program within the framework established by board policy.
  8. Coordinate or interpret the results of testing to teachers, students and parents.
  9. Serve as a consultant to teachers and parents in the academic and behavioral areas.
  10. Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.
  11. Remains readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
  12. Keep teachers informed of developments concerning individual pupils, which have a bearing upon the classroom situation.
  13. Takes an active role in interpreting the school's objectives to students, parents, and the community at large.
  14. Provide parents with information about the counseling program and their role in supporting the program.
  15. Assists parents in developing realistic perceptions about their children's aptitudes, abilities interests and developments.
  16. Maintain abreast of all local, state, and federal services available to students.
  17. Assist in student referral to other agencies and coordinate the services for the students.
  18. Works with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the
  19. student personnel services department, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled.
  20. Maintains and interprets accurate academic records and uniform transcript records for assigned students.
  21. Participates in staff in-service and professional development activities.
  22. Daily attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the job.
  23. Perform other duties as assigned.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals
Motion: Repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching
Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (up to 40+ lbs.)
Mental Demands: Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and written), concentrate, reason, analyze
differentiate, read, coordinate, instruct, and maintain emotional control under stress, may work prolonged
or irregular hours
