Location: Family Shelter Site

Status/Hours: Full-time, Monday � Friday (some evening hours may be required)

Salary Range: $50,000 - $50,000

Program Description

Brooklyn Community Services (BCS) operates family shelters providing safe, supportive, and dignified transitional housing for families with children experiencing homelessness. Our shelter programs are guided by a trauma-informed, strengths-based philosophy and offer a comprehensive continuum of services�including case management, housing placement, recreation, and supportive programming�to help families achieve stability and permanent housing as quickly as possible. All shelter staff are expected to uphold BCS's commitment to equity, cultural humility, and client-centered care.

Position Overview

The Case Manager provides comprehensive, trauma-informed case management services to families residing in the shelter. Working as a key member of the social services team, the Case Manager supports families in stabilizing their immediate needs, addressing barriers to housing, and developing and implementing individualized service plans toward permanent housing and self-sufficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Case Management Services

  • Carry an assigned caseload of families; conduct regular individual and family meetings to assess needs, monitor progress, and adjust service plans.

  • Develop individualized Service Plans with families within required timeframes, addressing housing, income, benefits, childcare, health, and other identified needs.

  • Connect families to internal and community-based resources including benefits, employment, legal services, childcare, and mental health supports.

  • Assist families in completing housing applications, documentation, and eligibility processes for housing subsidy programs.

  • Conduct room visits, family meetings, and required DHS contacts on schedule; maintain documentation in CARES.

Crisis Intervention and Support

  • Provide immediate crisis intervention and supportive counseling to families experiencing acute distress.

  • Coordinate with shelter leadership and external agencies in response to safety concerns, child welfare involvement, or family emergencies.

  • Make mandated child abuse and neglect reports as required by law.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete case records in CARES and BCS systems in accordance with DHS standards.

  • Prepare and submit required reports on client progress, program outcomes, and compliance indicators.

  • Participate in weekly supervision, case conferences, and team meetings.

  • Adhere to all DHS, BCS, and program policies and procedures.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, or a related field required; MSW preferred.

  • Experience: Minimum of one to two years of case management experience; experience in shelter, housing, or family services strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge: Familiarity with NYC housing resources, public benefits, and DHS CARES system a plus.

  • Skills: Strong interpersonal, written, and organizational skills. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Commitment to trauma-informed practice and cultural humility.

  • Other: Bilingual ability (Spanish or another language spoken in the community served) strongly preferred. Candidates will be subject to a criminal background check in accordance with applicable law, including NYC Fair Chance Act requirements.
