Job Title: Desk Assistant

Reports To: Assistant General Manager 

Location: Walker Avenue Apartments at University of Maryland of Baltimore County

Compensation: $15.00 per hour. Position works up to 20 hours per week

Term: on or about May 20, 2026 – May 19, 2027

FLSA Status: Student Non-Exempt



Summary:

The Desk Assistant reports directly to the Assistant General Manager and accepts instructions from the Licensing Coordinator and Office Coordinator. Overall responsibilities include contributing to a high-quality living experience for our Walker Avenue Apartments (“Walker”) residents by complementing the academic goals and personal growth of the students via excellent customer service and responsiveness.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend all DA training sessions, weekly meetings, and complete training programs (including online training) and participate in on-going training with the Assistant General Manager on an as-needed basis
  • Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with residents, visitors, Management Office staff, Residential Life staff, and University staff.
  • Regularly clarify University Code of Conduct, Residential Life’s Rights and Responsibilities Guide, Walker License, and Walker Rules and Regulations, policies (including payment collection), and procedures to all residents.
  • Conduct key audits (for lockout keys, unreturned keys, etc)
  • Forward voicemail and/or email communications to the appropriate staff member
  • Receive and distribute packages to residents (utilizing notice and sign-out methods)
  • Receive rental payments (using designated methods)
  • Observe closing instructions at end of shifts
  • Assist with license signing processes (and related documentation)
  • Submit work orders via the Resident Portal 
  • Instruct residents on how to utilize the Resident Portal
  • Be present for Check- in(s) at the beginnings of license periods and perform related duties accordingly 
  • Ensure that necessary forms and reports are completed accurately and submitted on timePerform any additional functions as assigned by their supervisor

  • High school diploma.
  • Enrolled as a current University of Maryland Baltimore County student and in good standing (academic, conduct, and financial) with both UMBC and Walker Avenue Apartments
  • Ability to lift up to 35lbs and navigate up and down stairs.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in verbal communication.
  • Possess strong customer service skills.
  • Be comfortable working in Excel, Microsoft Word, and other office programs as necessary. 
  • Professional and courteous in dealing with residents.
  • Availability to work posted work schedules 

Availability to work 9am – 10pm during the Fall/Spring, and 9am-8pm during the Summer/Winter semesters. Participate in all staff meetings Evening and weekend shifts are required; weekday 9:00-6:00pm shifts are not guaranteed Attend all shifts as scheduled, or arrange for a reliable shift replacement

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. This not an employment contract. 


Hourly wage is $15.00 per hour Number of hours worked per week is determined by supervisor, and may fluctuate according to needs of the site (i.e. openings, closings, 'turn' periods, license signing, etc).
