Job Description

Are you an early bird who likes working outside, enjoys doing light maintenance/landscaping-type work, and helping people stay fit? If so, this job is for you. No experience required.

 

The Asheville Racquet Club (ARC) is the largest tennis and pickleball facility in western North Carolina and one of the premier family-oriented fitness clubs in the nation. This position is responsible for the care of clay and hard tennis courts along with indoor and outdoor pickleball courts at ARC’s facility in south Asheville.

 

This position requires someone who takes pride in their work. At a high level, the major job duties include…

  • seasonal upkeep tasks,
  • daily grooming of clay courts,
  • monitoring water feeds to clay courts,
  • keeping outdoor hard courts free of leafy debris,
  • using electric sweepers to regularly clean indoor tennis/pickleball courts and
  • refreshing indoor/outdoor court amenities.

 

Job duties also include overseeing some part-time help. Position requires being able to drive a golf cart, routinely lifting up to 25 lbs. (with a maximum of 75 lbs. on occasion) and walking 5,000 to 10,000 steps per shift.

 

Some light do-it-yourself (DIY)-level indoor maintenance tasks will be required from time to time but mostly in the winter months when outdoor courts are closed or unused.

 

Compensation: $16 - $18/hour, based on starting experience with a $2.00 per hour raise after a 90 day probationary training period. Full-time employees are eligible for benefits as well as a discounted club membership for the employee and household family with access to all facilities, including the outdoor swimming pool and fitness rooms.

 

Responsibilities and Duties [Part-time help can assist with most items.]

  • Assist in the process of court opening and court closing each Spring and Fall, which includes putting up and taking down lines, nets, water coolers, cooler stands, scorecards, court numbers, benches, and windscreens.
  • Groom the courts twice daily (morning and afternoon) which includes a combination of rolling and brushing, and cleaning the lines. Grooming of the courts will need to be on weekends as well, using part-time help.
  • Monitor the clay court irrigation/watering system, making adjustments as needed due to weather or other issues.
  • Fill water coolers with fresh water and ice daily on all courts; replenish cupholders as needed.
  • Pick up trash within the fences of the courts, as well as the grassy areas around the outside of all courts.
  • Keep weeds and algae from growing on the clay tennis courts, using manual pulling, vinegar-based weed killer, and algaecide treatments.
  • Use minor maintenance equipment and tools for various jobs; such as pressure washer, drill, saws, and leaf blower
  • Communicate with front desk staff about court availability due to weather or maintenance issues.
  • Clear leafy debris from hard courts, using a leaf blower and rakes as needed.
  • Keep windscreens secured to fences.
  • Sweep indoor court surfaces every one or two weeks as needed.
  • Refresh trash and water coolers on indoor courts daily.
  • Keep on-court furniture orderly.

This person should be able to…

  • Work weekday mornings/afternoons and occasional weekends,
  • Schedule/coordinate part-time help to cover weekends, sick days, and time off,
  • Work independently with minimal supervision, using an annual operational plan to manage weekly tasks,
  • Juggle tasks and solve problems as the arise,
  • Report on progress and plans at a monthly staff meeting, and
  • Coordinate with outside contractors and internal maintenance teams that will support major issues related to court repairs, electrical systems, plumbing, and landscaping.
