JOB TITLE: Recreation Manager

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

DEPARTMENT: CRE/Recreation

SUPERVISOR: Director & Deputy Director Community Recreation & Events

SALARY: $76,592 to $114,887 Annually

 

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

 

To direct, manage, supervise, and coordinate the programs and activities of the Recreation Division; to coordinate assigned activities with other City departments, divisions, and outside agencies, and to provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Director of Community Recreation and Events.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Manage all services and activities of the Recreation Division including special events, adult and youth programs, sports leagues, and facilities.
  • Manage and participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the division; establish and administer policies and procedures.
  • Stay current and implement new trends and innovations in the field of recreation.
  • Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; recommend appropriate service and staffing levels.
  • Oversee the use of facilities; supervise facility maintenance, repairs, and improvements.
  • Select, train, motivate and evaluate personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies and initiate discipline when necessary.
  • Develop and administer the annual budget; direct the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures; implement adjustments.
  • Coordinate promotional activities with staff, publications, and media; oversee participation statistics; develop and administer a variety of surveys; coordinate with other providers; make presentations.
  • Develop formal and informal communication and initiatives with internal and external entities to promote education on healthy lifestyle choices to the community.

  • Knowledge of supervision, training, and performance evaluation principles.
  • Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a recreation program.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Management skills to analyze programs, policies, and operational needs.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Skills to select, supervise, train, and evaluate staff.
  • Skills to develop and administer program goals, objectives, and procedures.
  • Skills to research, analyze, and evaluate new service delivery methods and techniques.
  • Skills to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions & implement.
  • Skills to prepare clear and concise administrative and financial reports.
  • Ability to prepare and administer large and complex program budgets.
  • Ability to manage, direct and coordinate the work of lower-level staff.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to monitor and remedy unsafe conditions, respond to emergency situations, and maintain accident and incident reports.

 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB

Required:

  • Associate degree in Recreation management, business administration or related field with four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in recreation administration.
  • Valid class C driver’s license.

 

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation management, business administration or related field and four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in recreation administration, including two (2) years in a supervisory management capacity.

 

  • Class B CDL driver’s license with passenger and air brake endorsements preferred.

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 30 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

 

Working Environment:

Work closely with others in an office environment, indoor, and outdoor environment; irregular work hours; exposure to inclement weather and risks associated with the operation of recreation programs and facilities.
