GENERAL SUMMARY 

Range: 25.00-34.00; A histotechnician, also known as a histology technician, prepares tissue samples for microscopic examination by pathologists, aiding in the detection and diagnosis of diseases. They cut, mount, and stain tissue samples, ensuring accurate and detailed analysis.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION/COMPETENCIES 

The responsibilities and duties described in this job description are intended to provide a general overview of the position. Duties may vary depending on the specific needs of the affiliate or location you are working at and/or state requirements. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination, including embedding, sectioning, and staining.
  • Process and maintain tissue samples following established protocols to ensure accurate and reliable results.
  • Calibrate and maintain histology equipment and instruments, ensuring proper functioning and cleanliness.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of tissue samples and processing procedures. Ensure proper documentation for traceability, compliance, and auditing purposes.
  • Work in tandem with fellow employees to ensure efficient workflow, seamless tissue processing, and accurate results. Foster a cooperative and supportive team environment to achieve departmental goals and maintain high standards of quality.
  • Performs other position related duties as assigned.
  • Employees shall adhere to high standards of ethical conduct and will comply with and assist in complying with all applicable laws and regulations. This will include and not be limited to following the Solaris Health Code of Conduct and all Solaris Health and Affiliated Practice policies and procedures; maintaining the confidentiality of patients' protected health information in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA); immediately reporting any suspected concerns and/or violations to a supervisor and/or the Compliance Department; and the timely completion the Annual Compliance Training.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURES OR REGISTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certification or registry eligible.

KNOWLEDGE | SKILLS | ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff.
  • Ability to demonstrate fine motor skills, as the role requires precision in handling delicate tissue samples and laboratory equipment."
  • Knowledge of Biology, Chemistry and Anatomy.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Skill in using computer programs and applications including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work independently and manage deadlines.
  • Complies with all health and safety policies of the organization and HIPPA regulations for patient confidentiality.
  • Participates in educational activities.
  • Effectively and efficiently operate laboratory equipment, control and adjust laboratory instruments.
  • Adequate general knowledge of histology equipment and must have the ability to uphold specific maintenance requirements.
  • Ability to listen, read, understand, and follow oral, and written instruction. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • General extensive knowledge and understanding of histology terminology and to articulate clearly within the workplace.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Associates Degree (A.A) in Biology or Chemistry, from a two-year college required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or Chemistry preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Histotechnician experience is preferred; however, candidates who meet the educational requirements will have on-the-job training available.
