POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Sports Program Director and Associate Sports Director the Sports Coordinator assists with the delivery of preschool and school age Sports classes and programs, provides administrative support to the recreational and competitive sports programs where needed and leads in the delivery of the Sunday/weekday sports programs and adult sports leagues, schedule subject to change based on program season. Working under the guidance of the Director and Associate Director, the incumbent provides an essential supporting role serving as manager of open sports programs and the gym monitor schedule. This individual creates and provides a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
The schedule is subject to change seasonally based on the essential needs of the sports program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
PROGRAM MANAGEMENT
- Has and maintains current knowledge and understanding of all programs offered.
- Remains knowledgeable of the current trends in sports and recreation.
- Provides an energizing safe and fun environment for participants.
- Oversees open sports offerings, including but not limited to basketball, volleyball and pickleball.
- Instructs assigned classes.
- Coaches developmental and competitive programs as assigned.
- Serves as gym monitor during open programs.
STAFF SUPERVISION, LEADERSHIP & DEVELOPMENT
- Manages gym monitor staff schedule for open programs, ensuring all shifts are covered and providing coverage in the case of call outs.
- Supports coordination of substitute staff schedules
- Supports in the training and development of all related staff, modeling high quality standards.
- Adheres to policies related to boundaries with children and reinforces with all staff.
- Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations and follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONISBILITIES
- Daily monitoring of open programs in Group ExPro, ensures all registrants have proper memberships for participation.
- Under the Director and Associate Director’s guidance, respond professionally and positively to members’ and/or parents’ concerns
- Ensures all changes to open programs are updated on website timely.
- Maintains and updates class rosters as needed.
ORGANIZATION-WIDE SUPPORT/COLABORATION
- Interacts with a positive attitude with participants, members, parents and staff.
- Performs as an integral member of the Family Center staff team, working toward an increase in member growth, satisfaction and retention and program expansion.
- Handles unexpected situations/emergencies in an efficient, professional manner, completes incident reports following every qualifying incident.
- Work, support and coordinate activities with the Summer Quest camp team as needed during summer camp season.
- Maintains a clean, organized and safe facility. Inspects equipment to ensure it is in proper working order and reports any areas that may require maintenance or repair.
- Participates in staff meetings and trainings.
- Assists with other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of 18 years of age.
- Minimum two years relevant experience, working knowledge of sports programs, including adult and youth sports, teams, and leagues. Extensive knowledge of a variety of sports.
- Prior supervisory experience preferred.
- Must enjoy working with youth and adults, possess good communication skills, be enthusiastic, and self-motivated.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to work independently on relationship development communications.
- Competence with programs and automated databases, e.g., Microsoft Office/Excel programs and ActiveNet.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time. May also require bending, kneeling, leaning.
- Comfortable administering first aid and exposure to bodily fluids and communicable diseases is possible.
- Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.
- Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency. Able to administer first aid.
- Ability to view/enter data for long periods of time.
- Ability to withstand a wide range of outside temperatures – heat, cold, wind, rain.
- Must be able to work irregular shifts which includes early mornings and weekends.
