Job Description

TITLE: Assistant Coach

REPORTS TO: Head Coach

SUPERVISES: N/A

JOB FUNCTION: The Assistant Coach is responsible for meeting the vision and objectives of the sport program as 

outlined by the Head Coach, Athletic Director and school administration. They will instruct 

athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategy and physical training necessary to realize 

a degree of individual and team success.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assumes the responsibility of the Head Coach in his/her absence.
  • Adheres to the KHSAA Handbook, regulations, policies, LaRue County Schools Coaches Handbook, and district policies and procedures.
  • Maintains competency in KHSAA rules, event procedures, coaching techniques and general information about all aspects of the sport.
  • Works cooperatively with all LaRue County Schools coaches, athletic director, students, and staff to ensure healthy, positive relationships.
  • Supervises athletes and team assigned, which includes before and after practice. Assumes supervisory control over all athletes in the program when such control is needed.
  • Works within the basic framework and philosophy of the head coach of that sport.
  • Assures possession of a copy of each student's current physical before allowing the student to participate.
  • Assists in assuring that a copy of the student's commitment form is on file in the athletic office before allowing the student to compete.
  • Helps in the planning and implementation of both in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs.
  • Assists in the responsibility for the care of equipment and facilities being used, the issuance, return, and maintenance of equipment. Assists in ensuring that all equipment is cleaned, repaired, and stored properly at the ends of the season.
  • Assists in providing information on game times, bus schedules, and practice times to parents and athletes.
  • Instructs team members concerning changes in rules. Teaches fundamentals of the sport as outlined by the head coach.
  • Assists the head coach in the supervision of volunteers and students involved in assigned sport.
  • Maintains discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program and school community.
  • Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times.
  • By his/her presence at all practices, games and while traveling, provides assistance, guidance and safeguards for each participant.
  • Secures all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving the building when custodians are not on duty.
  • Performs scouting duties for the varsity team per Head Coach's request.
  • Conducts self in an appropriate professional manner, serving as a role model for the student-athletes and represents the school in a favorable manner.
  • Serves in a leadership capacity within the school and community.
  • Performs all other duties which may be assigned by the Head Coach, Athletic Director and/or Principal.

COMPENSATION: Stipend set forth by LaRue County Board of Education

EVALUATION: Conducted annually by the Athletic Director.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Must be 21 years of age. Must have a high school diploma. Must have 48 college credit hours.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Successful completion of a criminal records check; KHSAA Rules Clinic for respective sport; KHSAA Sports Safety Course; and current certification in first aid and CPR.
