Summer Intern – Heavy Equipment Repair Shop

Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated and dependable Summer Intern to assist our Heavy Equipment Repair Shop team. This hands-on internship provides exposure to the maintenance and repair of construction equipment used in earthwork, utility, roadway, and site development operations. The intern will support shop technicians with daily maintenance activities, equipment inspections, shop organization, and basic repair tasks while learning safe shop practices and equipment operations.
This position is ideal for students pursuing careers in diesel technology, heavy equipment mechanics, automotive technology, welding, or construction management.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist mechanics and technicians with preventive maintenance and basic repairs on heavy construction equipment.
- Perform equipment inspections, fluid checks, lubrication, and cleaning of machinery and tools.
- Help maintain a clean, safe, and organized repair shop and yard.
- Learn proper use of shop tools, diagnostic equipment, and safety procedures.
- Support parts inventory organization and assist with parts delivery or pickup as needed.
- Wash and prepare equipment for service or field use.
- Observe and assist with troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues.
- Follow company safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements at all times.
- Complete other duties and special projects assigned by shop leadership.
Qualifications
- High school student, recent graduate, or college/trade school student preferred.
- Interest in heavy equipment, diesel mechanics, construction, or related trades.
- Willingness to learn in a fast-paced shop environment.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and positive attitude.
- Ability to follow instructions and work safely around equipment and tools.
- Basic mechanical knowledge or shop experience is helpful but not required.
- Valid Texas driver’s license preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors and in a shop environment during varying Texas weather conditions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work around heavy machinery for extended periods.
Work Schedule
- Seasonal summer position
- Full-time or part-time hours available based on candidate availability
- Typical schedule: Monday–Friday with occasional early mornings or overtime opportunities
