Job Description
The Molecular Immunologic and Translational Sciences (MITS) Core at the University of Virginia is seeking a motivated and eager-to-learn Lab Specialist. This role involves providing technical support for assays, including sample staining. Primary responsibilities include maintaining equipment, performing slide imaging, and assisting with or conducting image analysis projects. The ideal candidate is willing to learn, comfortable working on-site at UVA, and able to spend extended periods working at a computer.
Candidates should be proficient with Windows-based computer systems and Microsoft Excel; experience with R is a plus but not required.
Key responsibilities include:
Performing duties similar to a Lab Technician I, such as conducting analyses, supporting research or clinical work, and maintaining laboratory equipment and apparatus.
Coordinating and participating in routine technical tasks and experiments.
Assisting in the evaluation of research methods, procedures, and techniques in line with established objectives.
Supporting researchers with data manipulation, computation, and analysis using specialized software.
Helping train staff and students on laboratory procedures and potentially supervising students or volunteers.
Assisting Principal Investigators and senior staff in developing new experimental strategies and techniques.
Performing additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Education: Associate's degree required; may accept equivalent combination of experience, education, certification in lieu of degree; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience: 1-2 years of lab experience which may include student experience.
Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
Anticipated salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
