Organization and Position Overview

Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. The first-ever facility of its kind, combining research and manufacturing in a single location, the Medicine Foundry will allow Lilly to further develop innovative solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, while also reducing costs and environmental impact.

The Lilly Medicine Foundry Warehouse Process Engineer works in a GMP setting responsible for analyzing workflows, identifying inefficiencies, and implementing data-driven solutions that improve throughput, safety, accuracy, and cost. This is an on-site role based in a warehouse/distribution center environment. You will partner closely with operations, logistics, and technology teams to assist in the design and sustain high-performing processes in a fast-paced distribution environment that works within a highly regulated pharmaceutical environment, and upholds strict standards for safety, quality, documentation, material control, and inventory integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and improve end‑to‑end material flows from receiving through storage, staging, production, and shipment.
  • Develop, standardize, and maintain process maps, SOPs, and work instructions for warehouse operations.
  • Become a Subject Matter Expert on the equipment as it relates to operation to assist in trouble shooting and process improvements in the sampling and dispensing suites including Isolators, Downflow Booths and FUME Hoods.
  • Identify bottlenecks, waste, and variability using Lean, Six Sigma, and industrial engineering principles.
  • Support layout optimization for storage, material handling equipment, and production interfaces.
  • Optimize receiving, put‑away, sampling, weigh and dispensing, kitting, and shipping processes.
  • Support ERP/WMS/MES process improvements and system integrations.
  • Lead and assist with root cause analysis, and corrective action plans.
  • Assist with tracking KPIs (e.g., throughput, inventory turns, downtime, material shortages).
  • Use data to recommend and implement sustainable improvements.
  • Will have occasional exposure to varying temperatures, noise, and warehouse equipment.
  • Support safety, quality, and compliance initiatives.
     

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain, or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in a GMP environment within a warehouse or manufacturing operations.
  • Strong experience with process mapping and standard work development.
  • Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing / Continuous Improvement tools.
  • Experience collaborating with hourly operations teams and frontline leaders.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and work on the warehouse floor for extended periods.
  • Some travel may be required to benchmark processes across the network.

Additional Preferences:

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Previous experience with RF scanners/handheld devices, MES and WMS (SAP).
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Lean certification.
  • Experience supporting multi‑site or large‑scale operations.
  • Knowledge of material handling equipment and warehouse layout design.

Other Information:

  • Overtime and flexibility in shift will be required.
  • This role has opportunity for direct interaction with regulatory agencies during site inspections.
  • Tasks require working around hazardous or other dangerous materials.
  • Initial location in Indianapolis, Indiana. Permanent location at the new Lilly Medicine Foundry in Lebanon, Indiana.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is

$66,000 - $171,600

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
