AmeriCorps Visitor Information Assistant (BLM, Casper Field Office)
Job Description
The GBI Program at GBI, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management at the Casper Field Office is recruiting one (1) AmeriCorps member to serve as a Recreation Technician. Under the direction of agency staff, the selected candidate will work closely with office personnel and field employees to provide front desk and administrative support, including greeting customers and members of the public, answering general inquiries, transferring phone calls, routing visitors to appropriate staff for technical assistance, and serving as a primary point of contact for employees working in the field. This position is communication-focused and requires strong interpersonal and organizational skills to support daily office operations and public engagement.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Serving as a primary contact with the public through several venues including over the phone, in-person, and through special events outreach;
- Communicating information regarding the geographic features, recreation sites, hiking and recreation opportunities, and local regulations to visitors;
- Reviewing, cataloguing, digitizing, maintaining, and updating resource materials for public and agency use; and
- Serving independently or as part of a team to support these objectives and others (e.g. data collection).
*Members are required to take a mandatory 30-minute lunch break each service day. This break does not count toward their service hours for the education award.
Timeline:
- Start: Mid-late June, 20 week duration (not to extend past 12/31/26); and
- Full time (40 hours/week).
Location:
Based in Casper, WY, in the vicinity of Casper Mountain and southern Big Horns. The Casper Field Office manages 1,326,733 million acres of public land for diverse resources and uses, including National Historic Trails , rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking and livestock grazing.
Compensation and Benefits:
Living Allowance: $1260 biweekly (before taxes); not to exceed $12,600.00;
Segal AmeriCorps Education Award 675 hr: $2,817.14 upon successful completion of term;
Benefits:

Segal Education Award:
After successfully completing an AmeriCorps term of service members are eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. Award varies based on term of service. You can use the award to repay qualified student loans and to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs.
Student Loan Forbearance:
If you are currently paying on any federal student loans you have the option to put those loans into forbearance during your time as an AmeriCorps volunteer, that will allow you to cease payments while serving.
Interest Accrual Repayment:
As an AmeriCorps alum, you are eligible to have the National Service Trust pay all or a portion of the interest that accumulated on your qualified student loan(s) during your term of service. These payments are made in addition to the Education Award, and are not deducted from your Education Award balance. To be eligible to have accrued interest paid: The loan must have been placed in forbearance for the service period, and you must have successfully completed a term of service and received an Education Award.
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Eligibility:
AmeriCorps Volunteers are eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Required:
(This AmeriCorps position is open to US Citizens, Nationals, or Permanent Residents age 17 or older)
- Earned or currently earning Bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Recreation Planning, or related discipline, or a combination of relevant education and field experience;
- Enthusiasm about the position, with interest in and knowledge of Outdoor Recreation and Visitor Services;
- Excellent organizational and communication skills;
- Ability to work independently, collaboratively and in a team setting;
- Possess a clean, valid state-issued driver’s license and the ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle on and off paved roads;
- Driving: Must provide a valid driver’s license and possess a clean driving record;
- Successful applicants must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to BLM- human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position. - AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limited to earning equivalent of two full-time education awards), (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) name search and federal criminal background check, (4) adhere to the rules, regulations and code of conduct as specified in the Member Service Agreement; and (5) not engage in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement.
