Job Goal:  Maintenance "A" personnel are responsible for major repair and preventative maintenance related to assigned skill.  Performs and coordinates the work and inspection schedules within all aspects of the Brandywine School District Maintenance of Athletic Fields and Groundskeeper maintenance programs. Included and not limited to, Turf Management, Irrigation systems, Tree care, Leaf removal, Snow removal, Asphalt repair, Parking lot striping and Playground equipment. Assists in the maintenance and repair of all district ground support equipment.


Job Qualifications:

  1. Coordinates Work for Itinerant, Mobile and on-site School Groundskeepers.
  2. Prepares daily, seasonal and annual grounds maintenance plans for all district properties.
  3. Assists Facilities Manager in maintaining inventory of all ground material, equipment, and contractual services for maintenance as well as specific site improvement projects.
  4. Prepares project plans and coordinates installation.
  5. Inspects and verifies contracted quoted services have been performed prior to the release of quoted funds.
  6. Periodically inspects all district owned property for hazards and safety issues.
  7. Trains grounds personnel in maintenance methods and standards required for the upkeep of the grounds.
  8. Orient newly hired Groundskeepers to familiarize them with tools, equipment, properties where they will be assigned, and District Policies and Procedures.
  9. Assist Specialist / Manager with the development, coordination and implementation of preventive maintenance programs related to grounds maintenance.
  10. Remains up to date and informed with current practices in all State and Federal regulations and codes related to Grounds Maintenance.
  11. Attending on going education classes and meetings as required.
  12. Must be able to perform all duties in a safe and professional manner in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures.
  13. Must participate in all required District, Department and trade training as needed.
  14. Maintain pertinent maintenance records regarding chemical applications.
  15. Participates in the Districts computerized work order system.
  16. Certification in Grounds Maintenance and or Sports Turf.
  17. Heavy equipment operation preferred.  
  18. Five years of formal training or an equivalent combination of training and experience in grounds maintenance programs, to include athletic field preparation, equipment maintenance and inventory control practices.
  19. Must hold a Supervisor and Chief Custodian Certificate (120 hours); be in the process of obtaining it, or a commitment made to obtain the certificate within eighteen months of employment.
  20. Must hold a current State of Delaware Certified Applicator (Restricted Use) or Private-Commercial pesticide/herbicide application license. Possess working knowledge and experience with chemical and fertilizer formulations and use on all District Grounds.
  21. Ability to use horticultural manuals and other professional materials related to job duties, and is able to interpret and follow State and Federal regulations regarding various sprays and chemicals.
  22. Ability to read and utilize blue prints for new, renovated and/or repaired District grounds.
  23. Ability to use good judgment, work both independently and as part of a team, follow through on assigned tasks and maintain confidentiality.
  24. Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships and interact professionally with all levels of staff, students, parents, vendors, clients and visitors.
  25. Possess a stable work history, strong work ethics, positive attitude, and good interpersonal skills.
  26. Must maintain a current Delaware (or other state issued) driver's license.
  27. Must be committed to professional development/continuing education for certifications and or licenses for career.
  28. Safe working knowledge of motor vehicle and all other motorized equipment operation.
  29. Must be able to read and write.
  30. Must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  31. Maintains a record of satisfactory attendance and performance evaluations.
  32. Must be able to operate all district grounds support equipment. (Tractors, backhoe's, Skid steers, Zero turn lawnmowers, Snow plows, trimmers and edgers).


Essential Functions:

  1. Assists and coordinates work for Itinerant-Mobile and on-site School Groundskeepers with the district-wide landscaping program, including maintenance and upkeep of all grounds, athletic field preparations, playground maintenance and Inspection's in accordance with established guidelines.
  2. Assist Facilities Specialist / Manager in maintaining inventory of grounds material, equipment and contractual services for general maintenance as well as specific site improvement projects at any district owned location as needed.
  3. Must be able to operate all district grounds support equipment.
  4. Prepares project plans and coordinates installation.
  5. Must hold and keep up to date Delaware Certified Applicators (Restricted Use) Private-Commercial Pesticide/Herbicide Application License as well as get any new certifications for requirements that are deemed necessary from the DDA in order to be able to apply fertilizers and or pesticides on any District owned property.
  6. Must possess computer knowledge and the ability or commitment to gain knowledge and experience to use computerized programs such as word and spreadsheets.
  7. Maintains inventory through a computerized Work Order system; or other including assistance with the requisition of new grounds maintenance equipment.
  8. Ensures that all tasks are being performed in compliance with established safety regulations and codes.
  9. Orders supplies, parts and equipment according to departmental procedures.
  10. Assists in the inspection of building entrances, sidewalks, parking and assigned areas for compliance with District snow removal programs.
  11. Assists in the investigation of unsafe grounds and/or athletic field complaints; makes recommendations for corrective measures.
  12. Completes assigned projects and additional tasks in a timely fashion.
  13. Ability to work without close supervision.
  14. Uses time efficiently and effectively by enforcing district guidelines and Board policies or directives.
  15. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, use hands to the finger(s), handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, use fingers to type and/or write; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; taste or smell.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close, distance, and color vision, peripheral and depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.  Must be able to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds. If lifting in excess of this weight is necessary, the assistance of a second person is required.  The physical demands of this position will also include the ability of the individual to perform all of the essential functions and related responsibilities of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

Work Environment: 

This position normally performs most of the work in an outside environment in all weather conditions.
