Title: School Nutrition Services Elementary Assistant Team Leader

Reports To: Team Leader 

Takes Direction From: Team Leader, Area Supervisor, Coordinator of SNS

Schedule/Calendar:  6-8 hrs./day 30 to 40 hrs./week 180 days/year 

 

Job Summary

The School Nutrition Services Assistant Team Leader performs all duties associated with the School Nutrition Services Assistant position while providing additional operational and leadership support within the kitchen. This position serves as the designated second-in-command and assists in coordinating food production, maintaining compliance with food safety standards, and supporting daily kitchen operations. The Assistant Team Leader is expected to assume full responsibility for kitchen operations in the absence of the Team Leader.

 

Essential Functions

Food Preparation and Service

  • Prepare and cook food items in accordance with standardized recipes and production requirements.
  • Assist in organizing and maintaining preparation and serving areas to ensure efficiency and cleanliness.
  • Serve food in an attractive and appropriate manner using proper portioning and serving utensils.
  • Perform cashiering duties as assigned, including operating the Point of Sale (POS) system, accurately processing transactions, and assisting with cash handling and reconciliation procedures.
  • Provide courteous and professional customer service to students, staff, and visitors.
  • Operate all kitchen equipment, including but not limited to ovens/Combis, steamers, dish machines, small appliances etc, in accordance with established procedures.
  • Perform cleaning and sanitation duties in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Follow all federal and state school nutrition regulations and guidelines.

Operational Support

  • Assist the Team Leader in coordinating daily kitchen operations, including food production and service flow.
  • Support proper receiving, storage, and rotation of food and supplies in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Monitor and record required food safety documentation, including temperature logs and HACCP procedures.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate meal counts and cash handling procedures, as assigned.
  • Support the organization and presentation of serving lines to ensure efficiency and student appeal.

Leadership and Team Support

  • Serve as the designated second-in-command within the kitchen.
  • Provide guidance and support to School Nutrition Services staff to ensure completion of daily tasks.
  • Promote a cooperative and productive work environment through effective communication and teamwork.

Team Leader Coverage Responsibilities

In the absence of the Team Leader, the Assistant Team Leader will assume responsibility for the operation of the kitchen, including:

  • Coordinating the preparation and service of all meals in accordance with program requirements.
  • Supervising kitchen and service staff to ensure adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Ordering food and supplies and verifying deliveries.
  • Completing production records, daily sales reports, and required documentation.
  • Operating and overseeing the Point of Sale (POS) system.
  • Ensuring compliance with all food safety, sanitation, and HACCP requirements.
  • Monitoring serving line efficiency, food quality, and presentation standards.
  • Completing end-of-day procedures, including reports and deposits.
  • Maintaining communication with school administration and School Nutrition leadership. Attend meetings in the absence of the Team Leader.
  • Adjust work schedule to match the Team Leader's assigned hours when serving in the acting Team Leader role, ensuring full coverage of kitchen operations and supervisory responsibilities during their absence.

 

Professional Responsibilities

  • Participate in required training programs, workshops, and in-service opportunities.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and effective communication with students, staff, and the school community.
  • Maintain flexibility in schedule and responsibilities, including working extended hours when serving as acting Team Leader.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Team Leader, Area Supervisor, or School Nutrition Services Coordinator.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • ServSafe Certification preferred or ability to obtain

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of food preparation, sanitation standards, and kitchen operations
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and complete tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to provide direction and support to staff
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn Point of Sale systems
