Reports To: Coordinator of Environmental & Custodial Operations
Takes Direction From: Coordinator of Environmental & Custodial Operations, Director & Assistant Director of Facilities & Operations, Building Principal
Schedule/Calendar: 8 hours/day 40 hours/week 12 Month Benefits
Salary: $26.36/hr.
Summary: The Head Custodian assists the principal in maintaining a high quality standard in his/her school by informing the principal of the condition of all assigned areas, reinforcing training, and motivating all custodial and maintenance staff to complete tasks on-time. Additionally, the Head Custodian provides students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop.
Essential Functions:
- Assist in the hiring and training of staff assigned to the building.
- Assist in the supervision of staff assigned to the building to include cleaning inspections.
- Schedule, coordinate and oversee the work of the custodial personnel assigned to the building.
- Monitor all electrical, plumbing, water treatment and other mechanical systems.
- Provide for overtime according to pre-approval procedure to assign personnel in a manner sufficient to the need.
- Requisition all custodial/maintenance equipment, materials, supplies, parts and tools for the buildings being supervised.
- Track all fixed assets of new and discarded items.
- Assist other district maintenance personnel in performing tasks as assigned.
- Availability 24/7 to react to emergencies or building alarms.
- Conduct safety inspections of the building, grounds, and playgrounds.
- Interact with staff, students, parents, and visitors in a professional manner.
- Perform other building maintenance tasks as assigned or directed.
- Personally perform custodial/maintenance tasks as needed.
- Arrange for the daily opening of the facility, and provide for any necessary daily checks of operating equipment at appropriate times.
- Provide prompt information to all emergency situations including equipment failure, fires, hazardous conditions, illegal entry, suspicious situations, etc., to the coordinator of facilities.
- Oversee department approved preventative maintenance procedures and to provide the facilities department with accurate, legible, current, records of same.
- Monitor, operate and schedule the heating, cooling, ventilating controls.
- Provide and manage snow and ice removal in a planned manner so that regular school hours, if possible, can be observed.
- Provide for and schedule custodial/maintenance needs related to community education, concerts, fairs, conferences, meetings, staff development, school board meetings, and all other special events.
- Provide custodial type security.
- Provide for reception, transfer, transport, delivery and storage of school and custodial/maintenance equipment, materials and supplies.
- Schedule substitutes as needed to supplement vacant positions or absent staff.
- Provide the facilities department with records on attendance.
- Perform maintenance of property and grounds including, but not limited to trash pickup, mowing, trimming, weeding, etc.
- Perform snow and ice removal tasks as needed and directed.
Education and/or Certification Required:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid PA driver's license
Experience Needed:
- Five years previous building maintenance and repair experience
Requisite Skills:
- Ability to read, write, understand, convey, and follow written and oral instructions
- Ability to plan, schedule, and control on site custodial work according to facilities department approved procedures
- Ability to frequently push, pull, lift, twist, stand, raise arms above shoulders, and stoop to floor
- Ability to work in noisy or dusty environments, inside and outside, and in extreme weather conditions
- Ability to support a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion
