Location: Manchester, Derby, or Warrington with Hybrid Working

Department: Safety & Regulatory Affairs

About the Role

We need you to help shape the future of clean energy by supporting the radiological protection aspects of the Rolls‑Royce SMR power station. As an Advisor in Radiological Protection, you’ll work across our engineering and safety teams to ensure radiation hazards are understood, controlled, and demonstrated to be ALARP within our integrated Environment, Safety, Security & Safeguards (E3S) Case.

This is a cross‑functional role where you’ll influence design decisions, contribute to licensing submissions, and drive best practice in radiological protection across our programme.

What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll make an impact by:

  • Supporting the evaluation of radiological protection requirements across the SMR design, ensuring compliance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations (IRR17) and wider nuclear safety guidance.
  • Providing expert advice to engineering teams to justify and demonstrate ALARP for radiation hazards.
  • Contributing to the development and execution of radiological protection programmes for the E3S Case.
  • Engaging with regulators and licensing authorities during SMR licensing activities.
  • Identifying operating experience and best practice from the nuclear industry and integrating it into design.
  • Supporting examination of innovative techniques that strengthen radiological safety.

What Success Looks Like

You’ll thrive in this role when you demonstrate:

  • High‑quality delivery of radiological protection documentation that meets regulatory and international expectations.
  • Effective, confident communication with internal teams, external partners, and regulators.
  • Strong understanding of IRR17, safety case development, ACOP and related nuclear safety expectations.
  • Ability to interpret how radiological protection considerations apply to power plant operations.
  • Constructive engagement with stakeholders across engineering, safety, and project delivery teams.

What You’ll Bring

We’d love to hear from you if you meet at least 75% of the following:

Essential

  • Degree at NQF Level 6 in a scientific or engineering discipline or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Membership of a relevant professional institute.
  • Good understanding of IRR17, the safety case process, and nuclear safety good practice.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to plan and deliver work to deadline with a high standard of accuracy.

Beneficial

  • Experience with operational nuclear power plant environments (normal operations or EMIT).
  • Awareness of wider regulatory frameworks (e.g., REPPIR).
  • Exposure to regulatory meetings, training delivery or similar.
