We are looking for an experienced, commercially minded Legal Counsel with at least 5-7 years of relevant legal experience from a reputable law firm or inhouse to join Ikano Retail’s centralised Legal Affairs function. Based in Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, this role has primary responsibility across the Southeast Asia Region, while maintaining a strong and hands-on focus on the Malaysian market.
You will work closely with business stakeholders, act as a trusted legal partner, and contribute directly to IKEA’s growth, expansion and day to day operations. The role reports to the Ikano Retail General Counsel.
Your assignment
- Provide legal advice and hands on‑ support across a wide range of commercial and regulatory matters, working closely with IKEA Malaysia and regional stakeholders.
- Draft, review, implement and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements and standard templates.
- Support growth initiatives, including expansion projects for new IKEA stores, e‑commerce and other strategic initiatives.
- Act as Data Protection Officer (DPO) and ensure compliance with applicable data protection and privacy laws.
- Advise on disputes and claims, coordinating with external counsel where appropriate.
- Support corporate governance and company secretarial matters.
- Evaluate legal and commercial risks associated with business decisions and provide pragmatic, solution-oriented‑ advice.
- Promote legal awareness by delivering training and supporting a strong compliance and risk culture.
Your profile
- 5–7 years of relevant legal experience, gained from a reputable law firm and/or an in‑house legal role, preferably in an international or commercial environment.
- LLB (Bachelor of Laws) from a recognised university.
- Admission as an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya is an advantage.
- Strong drafting, negotiation and stakeholder management‑ skills.
- Strong communication skills, and fluent (both written & verbal) in English.
- A proactive, curious and commercially oriented legal professional who enjoys being close to the business and working hands‑on.
- Comfortable working independently while collaborating with regional teams.
