Who we are:

Shineforth’s Charterhouse School is a place where Virginia’s kids with special needs can get out of their comfort zone and start to get out into the world. Our job is to show them a more effective and productive way. Our elementary, middle and high school students benefit from a proven curriculum of academic and social skills instruction. As a result, our fully accredited school has a proud history of helping students reach graduation or their goals of returning to public schools.

Who we serve:

Our population is comprised of children form ages 6 to 22, with autism and other neurological differences, emotional, learning, developmental, and intellectual disabilities, as well as other impairments. 8:1 ratios for student to Teachers/Support Staff.

POSITION SUMMARY

Teach middle and high school art classes that are aligned with Virginia SOLs. Plan and implement art shows and the summer art program to expose students to all types of art forms and/or to provide opportunities for student's to display art work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach art and educate students to a variety of art forms. Use lecturing, demonstrating, audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement teaching presentations.
  • Develop and implement an art curriculum facilitating the use of art to promote self worth, success and self-expression.
  • Encourage group and individual opportunities to display art work, by having art shows to provide additional opportunities for student's to display art work.
  • Plan organize and implement summer art programming.
  • Promote exposure to art events in the community and within the agency.
  • Undertake and direct the creation of special art projects, including backdrops for student performances.
  • Record grades, write comments and assign grades at end of each term.
  • Secure needed materials and make arrangement for the upkeep and maintenance of art equipment and the art room.
  • Provide classroom behavior management and therapeutic interventions.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Hold or be eligible to hold a Virginia Teaching Certificate, with endorsement in Art. Two year’s experience teaching art preferred. Teachers who are hired with a provisional teaching license must pass all requirements within the three year time frame.
