We are looking for a motivated and hands-on Team Leader for Beach Services to supervise our Beach and Resort Officers and help deliver a high-quality, safe and welcoming coastal environment across Torbay.

This is a key operational role where you will lead by example, ensuring beaches and promenades are well-maintained, compliant with legislation, and provide an excellent experience for residents and visitors.

What you will be doing:
  • Supervising and coordinating the day-to-day work of beach staff and seasonal teams. 
  • Planning and allocating tasks, ensuring resources and materials are available. 
  • Promoting and maintaining a strong health and safety culture across all operations. 
  • Monitoring standards to ensure beach awards and compliance requirements are met. 
  • Managing inspections, records, and reporting to the Beach Services Manager. 
  • Providing excellent customer service and responding to public enquiries. 
  • Working collaboratively with partner agencies including emergency services and contractors. 
About you
You will be an effective leader with strong organisational and communication skills. You will also bring:
  • Proven experience in supervising and motivating teams. 
  • Strong understanding of health & safety and compliance requirements. 
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, operational environment. 
  • Practical maintenance or facilities experience. 
  • Confidence dealing with the public and stakeholders. 
  • A background in a beach or coastal environment is highly desirable.

What to expect
This is an outdoor, physically active role working in all weather conditions. Duties include manual handling, operating equipment, and maintaining beach infrastructure.
You will need:
  • A full, valid driving licence. 
  • Flexibility to work weekends during the bathing season.

Skills

Essential:
  • Effective use of organisational skills, to include prioritisation and attention to detail and be able to work toward deadlines.  Where conflicting, can time manage and prioritise accordingly. 
  • Effective general maintenance skills. 
  • Effective people management and leadership skills to lead and work effectively as part of a team and give instruction to others. 
  • Provision of effective leadership to include the use of excellent and commercially based decision-making skills. 
  • Effective communication skills so that clear instruction instructions can be passed on, both to staff members and the public/harbour users. 
This role requires the ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence and fluency in English.


Knowledge

Essential:
  • Strong and effective knowledge of Health & Safety legislation. 
  • Effective knowledge and understanding of how to manage, including all aspects of people management and accurate record keeping. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of effective leadership qualities and practices. 
  • Effective knowledge and understanding of supervisory techniques to enable efficient use of resources and delegation. 
  • Effective knowledge and understanding of how-to performance manage resources to enable successful outcomes. 


Experience & Qualifications

Essential:
  • Educated to at least NVQ level 4 standard. 
  • Previous supervisory and leadership experience. 
  • Previous experience of working in a beach environment.
