Role Overview
The Professional Services Engineer is responsible for executing and delivering complex IT modernization projects based on solution designs developed by the Systems Architect. This role serves as the primary technical implementation lead, ensuring projects are deployed accurately, securely, and in alignment with architectural standards.
Apex primarily utilizes Dell, SonicWall, Ubiquiti and Cisco hardware across client infrastructure environments. Candidates must demonstrate proven proficiency and hands-on experience implementing, configuring, and supporting solutions built on these platforms.
This is a senior, client-facing role requiring deep hands-on technical expertise, strong communication skills, and the ability to independently execute complex infrastructure projects in a fast-paced professional services environment.
Primary Responsibilities
The Professional Services Engineer is responsible for the following activities in support of successful project delivery and client engagement:
- Lead technical execution from project kickoff through completion
- Deliver implementations within defined scope, timeline, and quality standards
- Identify, communicate, and mitigate technical risks during deployment
- Maintain alignment with approved architectural designs and internal standards
- Provide technical leadership during project execution
- Validate performance, resiliency, and operational readiness prior to project closure
- Produce clear documentation and knowledge transfer materials
- Ensure successful transition of completed solutions to managed services or operations teams
- Maintain professional, solution-oriented communication with client stakeholders
- Perform onsite project work at client locations as required
- Participate in scheduled after-hours or weekend implementation activities when necessary to minimize client business disruption
- Travel to client sites as needed to support project delivery
Experience & Technical Qualifications
The Professional Services Engineer must demonstrate senior-level, hands-on experience delivering complex enterprise IT projects in a professional services or MSP environment. This role requires independent execution capability across infrastructure, networking, cloud, modern workplace, and security platforms.
Professional Background
- 5+ years of hands-on experience implementing complex infrastructure solutions
- Proven history of independently executing complex migration and modernization initiatives
- Experience delivering projects for midsize and enterprise organizations
- Background operating in multi-site and hybrid environments
- Experience coordinating onsite deployments and scheduled cutovers
- Strong client-facing communication and documentation skills
- Expected Compensation of $115k to $125k Dependent on Experience
Infrastructure & Virtualization
Demonstrated experience implementing and migrating:
- Windows Server deployments and full server migrations
- VMware vSphere / ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V environments
- Physical-to-virtual and cross-platform migrations
- Enterprise storage solutions (SAN/NAS) and underlying storage technologies
- Windows Failover Clustering and high-availability configurations
- Enterprise backup platform implementation and recovery validation
Cloud, Identity & Modern Workplace Modernization
Experience executing cloud adoption, identity transformation, and endpoint modernization initiatives:
- Azure IaaS deployments and server-to-cloud migrations
- Active Directory to Entra ID transitions
- Hybrid identity architecture and synchronization
- Microsoft 365 migrations, tenant transitions, and consolidation projects
- SharePoint Online migrations
Modern Workplace & Endpoint Deployment
- Microsoft Intune and MaaS360 device management implementations
- Windows Autopilot provisioning and automated device enrollment
- Secure device configuration baselines and compliance policy deployment
- Conditional Access and Zero Trust-aligned device access configuration
- Endpoint lifecycle deployment as part of modernization initiatives
Identity & Access Security Implementation
- Multi-factor authentication (MFA) configuration
- Conditional Access policy deployment
- Secure identity configuration aligned with project requirements
Network Infrastructure Implementation
Demonstrated experience leading deployment and modernization of enterprise network environments:
- Full network infrastructure replacements and refresh initiatives
- Enterprise routing and switching implementations
- LAN/WAN and SD-WAN deployments
- Firewall implementation and secure remote connectivity solutions
- IPSec and SSL VPN deployments
- Network segmentation and performance optimization
- High-availability and business continuity configurations
Wireless & Connectivity
- Wireless LAN (WLAN) design and deployment across complex SMB and enterprise environments
- Access point and controller-based wireless implementations
- Secure wireless segmentation and guest network configuration
- Point-to-point and site-to-site wireless bridge deployments
- Coverage validation, signal optimization, and performance tuning
Security Implementation & Resiliency
Implementation-focused security experience within infrastructure projects:
- Firewall rule configuration and policy hardening
- Secure remote access configuration
- Endpoint protection deployment
- Backup validation and disaster recovery testing
- Implementation of security best practices within infrastructure deployments
Certifications (Preferred)
- Microsoft role-based certifications
- Cisco CCNA / CCNP
- VMware VCP
- Azure certifications
- Security+ or CISSP
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Primarily knowledge-based work utilizing computer systems and remote access tools
- Extended periods of sitting, typing, and screen-based work
- Frequent use of keyboard, mouse, and telephone/video conferencing tools
- Ability to lift and transport equipment up to approximately 25 pounds (servers, network hardware, peripherals)
- Ability to work in server rooms, network closets, and client office environments
- Occasional bending, kneeling, or crouching during equipment installation
- Ability to travel to client locations as required (local and occasional air travel)
- Availability to participate in scheduled after-hours or weekend project work when necessary
