Software Engineer 2 – Ads Engineering

We are reinventing advertising at eBay! As a Backend Engineer in the Ads team, you will work closely with designers, product managers and other engineers (frontend, backend, native, machine learning, quality) to redefine the advertising space for eBay and beyond. We are innovating rapidly in the ad-tech space and there is no shortage of new challenges for motivated individuals. Primary Job Responsibilities

You will be responsible for building next-generation advertising products and platforms across sponsored listings, ad targeting, relevance, campaign management, reporting, and monetization systems.

As a self-motivated and enthusiastic member of our team, you will collaborate with talented engineers, product managers, data scientists, and architects in a fast-paced environment to deliver world-class advertising solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy scalable distributed systems and backend services powering eBay Ads platforms.

  • Build high-performance APIs, data pipelines, and real-time services to support advertising delivery.

  • Collaborate with Product Management, Applied Scientists, Analytics, QA, and Operations teams to develop innovative solutions that meet business goals around scalability, reliability, latency, and user experience.

  • Participate in architecture discussions, design reviews, code reviews, and agile development activities.

  • Research, analyze, and evaluate technical options to solve complex engineering and business problems.

  • Contribute to engineering excellence through best practices in coding, testing, observability, and operational readiness.

  • Develop technical and domain expertise in advertising systems, experimentation, distributed systems, and large-scale platform engineering.

  • Continuously improve system performance, availability, and operational efficiency.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).

  • 2+ years of software development experience with strong computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, and distributed systems.

  • Proficiency in Java and experience building scalable backend applications, RESTful APIs, microservices, and event-driven systems.

  • Understanding of distributed systems concepts such as scalability, concurrency, resiliency, caching, and asynchronous processing.

  • Experience with cloud-native technologies, containerization, CI/CD pipelines, and modern development tools such as Git and JIRA.

  • Familiarity with technologies such as Kafka, gRPC, Redis, Elasticsearch, NoSQL databases, or big data and stream processing frameworks (e.g., Spark, Hadoop, Flink) is a plus.

  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions and leverage AI-powered development tools to improve productivity and software quality.

Additional Details

The base pay range for this position is expected in the range below:

C$98,800 - C$131,900

Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including RRSP eligibility, various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
