Senior Research Scientist in Digital Twin Applications
Job Description
Established nearly two centuries ago, FM is a leading mutual insurance company whose capital, scientific research capability and engineering expertise are solely dedicated to property risk management and the resilience of its policyholder-owners. These owners, who share the belief that the majority of property loss is preventable, represent many of the world’s largest organizations, including one of every four Fortune 500 companies. They work with FM to better understand the hazards that can impact their business continuity to make cost-effective risk management decisions, combining property loss prevention with insurance protection.
Fantastic opportunity for someone to join the Digital Twin Research Team as Research Scientist in Digital Twin Solutions, reporting to the Research Director of Automation and Intelligent Systems in Luxembourg.
Automation and Intelligent Systems present growing challenges and risks across industries. To deliver best-in-class, science-based loss prevention solutions, FM is investing heavily in this area, starting with a dedicated global Research Center for Automation and Intelligent Systems headquartered in Luxembourg.
This position is based in Luxembourg, the hub for global Automation and Intelligent Systems research and home to FM’s new EMEA Research and Training Centre (RTC), which also serves as the regional headquarters. The EMEA RTC will complement FM’s worldwide research network, including the headquarters in Norwood, MA, the Research Campus in Rhode Island, and the climate science team at the FM Centre in Singapore.
In this role, you will be part of FM’s Automation and Intelligent Systems Research Team, focused on industrial automation, robotics, digitalization, digital twins, and cybersecurity. Based in Luxembourg with additional U.S. locations, the team aims to reduce industrial risks from digitalization by advancing Digital Twin technologies, collaborating with leading experts, and leveraging insights from 1,300 engineers performing over 100,000 risk assessments annually. While matching the rigor of top academic and industrial labs, this research directly protects client businesses through engineering, underwriting, certification, and other FM Group functions.
In this role, you will support research into best practices in digital twin technologies and apply these insights to design, develop and evaluate advanced Digital Twin applications. You will focus on creating robust, scalable digital twin applications that integrate real-time industrial data into dynamic virtual representations, enabling monitoring, simulation, predictive analytics and decision support. You will also support the efforts to identify the risks and challenges that such applications can present to our clients, capture and integrate the lessons learned into standards and recommendations, as well as strengthen the team’s scientific foundation, reinforcing FM’s leadership in industrial digitalization and risk mitigation.
Responsibilities include:
- Design and develop advanced Digital Twin applications, ensuring alignment with best practices and project requirements.
- Investigate and develop risk evaluation techniques for typical applications our clients and stakeholders might use and implement in their Digital Twin ecosystems.
- Develop and manage semantic frameworks for Digital Twin ecosystems, including asset hierarchies, ontologies, and knowledge graphs, to enable interoperability and advanced inference across heterogeneous data sources.
- Implement and integrate diverse modeling approaches (e.g.: first-principle, data models, computer vision, probabilistic and statistical models, etc) within Digital Twin applications, while managing their lifecycle for consistency and continuous improvement.
- Develop and deploy Digital Twin applications using high-code, low-code, and no-code approaches, ensuring robust version control, quality assurance, and security compliance.
- Collaborate with other researchers and cross-functional teams to share expertise.
Compile research results and deliver presentations at internal meetings, conferences, and industry events
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in computer science, engineering or a related field (preferably with a focus on SW development). A bachelor’s degree combined with relevant experience is also acceptable.
- Experience developing applications using high-code, low-code, and no-code approaches, with basic experience in business analysis and UX/UI principles to ensure user-centric solutions.
- Experience with full-stack development covering front-end (modern web technologies and frameworks) and back-end (server-side programming, APIs, and database integration)
- Experience working in a DevOps environment, leveraging CI/CD pipelines and tools to enforce version control, quality assurance, and security compliance
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts into actionable strategies and plans.
- Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills, with the ability to build strong relationships, communicate effectively, and contribute to shared goals in cross-functional environments
Desired Skills and Competency Areas
- Knowledge of tools and practices for developing interactive and user engagement solutions, including dashboards, charts, maps, infographics, conversational interfaces (e.g., chatbots), and immersive technologies such as augmented and mixed reality.
- Experience developing applications for industrial environments, leveraging industrial data sources to enable real-time monitoring, analytics, and integration with operational systems.
- High-level understanding of industrial control systems, including key mechanisms for ensuring system integrity, such as mode management and delivery guarantees.
- Understanding of cybersecurity principles and industry-standard frameworks for securing platforms, systems and data.
