Job Description
Immediate Supervisor: Director of Special Education/Preschool
Appointment: Assistant Director of Special Education/Preschool will be appointed annually upon the recommendation of the Director of Special Education/Preschool to the Superintendent.
Qualifications:
- Shall hold a master's degree or higher and the required Kentucky certificate for the assigned position.
- Shall have a minimum of five (5) years experience teaching exceptional children.
- Shall have completed a course in special education and regular education case law.
- Shall demonstrate the ability to work effectively with students, peers and adults.
- Shall demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents and faculty.
Job Goal: Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, the Assistant Director of Special Education is responsible for oversight of the day-to-day functions of the District's Special Education programs. The Assistant Director of Special Services ensures compliance with due process laws, practices, and procedures through technical assistance to staff, parents, and others as required. Provides administrative oversight of District special education programs.
- Shall serve as the District Representative, empowered to make decisions and commit district resources, at special education staffing's.
- Shall lead the recruitment and retention of licensed special education staff.
- Shall evaluate licensed special education staff in collaboration with building principals.
- Shall consult with building principals regarding special education student needs and emergency situations.
- Shall assist the Director in coordinating and overseeing extended year programs.
- Shall assist the Director in analyzing, developing, and modifying special education programs to meet the needs of students.
- Shall determine the need for and facilitates staff development for special education staff on due process requirements, procedures, forms, etc. Works with new staff to acquaint them with District procedures and practices.
- Shall provide information to parents regarding the referral/assessment process, special education services available within the district, and their rights relative to special education.
- Shall consult and problem-solves with building principals and special education staff regarding difficult and/or potentially litigious special education issues.
- Shall monitor compliance with special education due process requirements, staff caseloads and continuum of services within the District.
- Shall routinely review and audit student Individual Education Plans to ensure compliance.
- Shall attend training sessions, conferences, seminars, department and district meetings.
- Shall serve on District committees, task forces, work groups, etc., as requested.
- Shall keep abreast of changing developments, trends, instructional and educational technologies.
- Shall have comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of school administration;
- Shall have comprehensive knowledge of issues related to special education law, finance and due process; thorough skill establishing policies and procedures to adhere to changing laws and regulations
Abilities and Skills:
- Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages;
- Ability to understand financial reports.
- Ability to develop and present ideas effectively and orally and in written form.
- Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish positive working relationships with others.
- Ability to transport self between and among school sites throughout the District, and to regional and state meetings as necessary.
- Ability to use technology in an effective manner to facilitate communication and work completion.
- Time management and the prioritization of activities
- Oversees the district's preschool program from the school level: this includes COS, full utilization agreements, and providing assistance to principals, consultants, RTC, and the preschool coordinator
- Other appropriate duties as assigned
Duration & Days of Employment: One year contract, 220 days
Terms of Employment:
Basic contract is for the minimum school term as reflected in the school calendar for the current year with the salary determine by the District Board-approved salary schedule. Additional duties may be assigned with increments for them determined by the District Board-approved Extra Service Schedule.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Certified Personnel.
