Through its Social Innovation Business that brings together IT, OT(Operational Technology) and products, Hitachi contributes to a harmonized society where the environment, wellbeing, and economic growth are in balance. Hitachi operates globally in four sectors – Digital Systems & Services, Energy, Mobility, and Connective Industries – and the Strategic SIB Business Unit for new growth businesses. With Lumada at its core, Hitachi generates value from integrating data, technology and domain knowledge to solve customer and social challenges. Revenues for FY2024 (ended March 31, 2025) totaled 9,783.3 billion yen, with 618 consolidated subsidiaries and approximately 280,000 employees worldwide. Visit us at www.hitachi.com.
What you’ll be doing
Hitachi has a long history of bringing technology to the market to solve societal problems and is committed to continuing to improve the lives of people around the world. Hitachi is an international company with subsidiaries around the world. The Hitachi Cambridge Laboratory (HCL) is one of many laboratories run by the company that are located in many different countries. HCL has been embedded within the University of Cambridge physics department since 1989 and has a history of working at the interface of quantum physics and new technologies. The laboratory is housed in the new state of the art Ray Dolby Centre which is the main laboratory of the Cavendish Laboratory. HCL has been working on quantum computing in silicon for nearly ten years and has consistently built-up capabilities in this area. HCL is part of a much wider team of researchers within Hitachi working on building the full stack required to make a large fault tolerant quantum computer base on the scaling advantages of silicon.
The Hitachi Cambridge Laboratory has a position available for a Quantum Scientist to work within the Cambridge team. The position is based in Cambridge and will involve RF measurements of our test QUBITs which are fabricated in the state-of-the-art facilities at IMEC in Belgium. The HCL laboratory is very well equipped and you will have extensive access to a dilution refrigerator with all the measurement equipment required for qubit testing and operation, coupling, control and readout. The role will include the opportunity to travel for short trips to Japan to work with the wider quantum team there.
What you bring to the team
We’re looking for a team player, who is motivated by delivering great work and the Hitachi vision.
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and background:
Successful candidates for this role should have a PhD in physics, engineering or a related discipline
Prior postdoctoral or industry experience is valuable, but this is not essential and we would be happy to accept applicants moving directly from a PhD.
We are looking for someone with a strong background in quantum dot quantum control, and hands-on experience in calibration, benchmarking, or coherent control of qubits, would be desirable. We’re looking for motivated scientists who can help us quickly identify and help solve roadblocks towards scaling to large quantum computers based on silicon qubits.
Proven expertise in experimental quantum dot physics for quantum computing. Alternatively, we are open to candidates with proven expertise that can be transferred to the task of building a silicon quantum processor. For example, experience of qubit control using other technologies, low temperature experiments, or rf experiments.
Prior experience in one or more of the following: coherent control of spin qubits based on electrons or holes in quantum dot systems, characterisation of control hardware, gate fidelity benchmarking or running quantum circuits on hardware.
Strong proficiency in programming and data analysis, experience of Python is desirable.
Strong collaborative skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a fast-moving team.
A track record of scientific communication through publications, talks and conferences would be advantageous.
