Job Description
Senior Accountant
Major Function
The Bezos Earth Fund is accelerating progress toward a more equitable, sustainable, and climate-resilient world. We're seeking a Senior Accountant to serve as a key operational partner to the Assistant Controller, with a primary focus on the month-end close process and day-to-day financial operations. This role owns critical close activities including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting in Sage Intacct, while also managing accounts payable, vendor compliance, and employee expense and travel functions through Ramp. As a trusted point of contact for internal staff and external vendors, the Senior Accountant helps maintain financial integrity, strengthens internal controls, and supports the Earth Fund's mission through accurate, timely, and well-documented financial operations.
Key Responsibilities
Month-End Close & Reporting:
- Prepare and post journal entries, including accruals, prepaid amortization, and reclassifications, with proper supporting documentation in accordance with GAAP.
- Perform monthly balance sheet account reconciliations, including bank reconciliations, investigating and resolving variances in a timely manner.
- Manage reconciliation and sync of data from external systems into Sage Intacct, identifying and escalating discrepancies as needed.
- Support monthly analysis of all accounts and categories and assist the Assistant Controller with budget-to-actual variance analysis.
- Assist in the preparation of the monthly financial reporting package.
- Maintain the month-end close checklist and coordinate with the Assistant Controller to ensure all tasks are completed within established deadlines.
Accounts Payable Administration:
- Process vendor invoices through AP software (Ramp), ensuring timely, accurate, and properly coded payments.
- Maintain and update vendor records, including onboarding, communication, and resolution of payment or documentation issues.
- Manage W-9 and W-8 collection and tracking to ensure IRS compliance; lead 1099 reporting and filing at year-end.
- Track contract information in Ramp and/or internal tracker, maintain organized records of fully executed vendor contracts, and assist the Assistant Controller and Controller with contract renewal workflows and documentation.
- Assist with AP-related reconciliations, tax preparation, and other accounting projects as needed.
Travel & Expense Management:
- Serve as the first-line reviewer of employee expense reports in Ramp, ensuring accuracy, proper coding, and adherence to established policies prior to Assistant Controller’s final review.
- Act as the primary point of contact for corporate cardholders and international staff regarding out-of-policy matters, policy questions, and expense submission processes.
- Enforce adherence to travel and expense policies through proactive communication and timely follow-up on missing documentation, unsubmitted reports, and policy exceptions.
- Act as the primary liaison with travel agents and employees to resolve booking or logistical issues.
- Develop summary metrics and compliance dashboards to inform leadership and promote transparency.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
The Earth Fund is an organization with lofty goals, and this opportunity represents a unique way to align one's professional skills with one's values and personal mission. The successful candidate will bring a strong technical accounting foundation and the operational ownership expected at a senior level — someone who can run the month-end close process, manage AP and expense functions with minimal oversight, and serve as a reliable partner to the Assistant Controller. This is a hands-on role that rewards initiative, precision, and a proactive approach to problem-solving in a lean, mission-driven environment.
More specifically, the Earth Fund seeks a professional who has:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required; CPA or CPA candidacy a plus.
- At least 5years of progressive accounting experience, including direct ownership of month-end close in a multi-entity or fast-paced environment.
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP.
- Experience with foundations, philanthropies, or other mission-driven organizations a plus.
- Hands-on experience with Sage Intacct or a comparable cloud-based ERP; familiarity with Ramp or similar AP/expense platforms a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including comfort working with large datasets, reconciliations, and variance analysis.
- Highly organized and self-directed, with the ability to manage multiple workflows independently and meet recurring deadlines.
- Detail-oriented and compliance-minded, with sound judgment in applying financial policies and escalating exceptions appropriately.
- Strong communicator with the ability to work cross-functionally, hold staff accountable to policy, and do so with professionalism and diplomacy.
- Comfortable operating in a lean team environment where responsibilities can shift, and where process improvement is welcomed rather than resisted.
- Commitment to confidentiality, integrity, and the Earth Fund's mission and values.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- May require extended hours for urgent issues or to meet established deadlines.
- This position is a hybrid position based in Washington, DC. A minimum onsite presence of two days per week is required.
Salary Range: $100,000 - $130,000
