This position serves to assist the museum director in managing properties held by History Colorado outside of the History Colorado Center, specifically the Center for Colorado Women’s History. The role focuses on the management of exhibit implementation, guest services, volunteer coordination, and operational systems provided by the Center for Colorado Women’s History. Additionally, the coordinator ensures admission and gift shop goals are met while supporting sustainable facility operations and income-generating activities.

Work includes but is not limited to the following:

Brief Duty Description:

Job Duty 1

  • Coordinate and lead CCWH team in producing exhibitions that align with our museum’s vision and mission.
  • Coordinate the design, production, and installation of one “marquee” exhibition per year on average, up to two temporary exhibitions, seasonal exhibitions, and self-guided interpretation.
  • Coordinate exhibition design concepts from initial concept through completion, installation and maintenance.
  • Complete historical research, descriptive writing, and coordination among other professionals to produce an exhibit for public viewing and engagement.
  • Conceptualize, articulate and illustrate design concepts through renderings in response to collaboration with developers and curators as necessary.
  • Design exhibits to maximize in-house production and coordinate vendors when necessary.
  • Provide project management, including timelines, budgets, and content from internal and external partners.
  • Create technical drawings for out-of-house production.

Job Duty 2

  • Provide a welcoming environment for museum guests, responding to guest questions about the museum and the surrounding area.
  • Manage the reception desk and provide strong customer service to guests. Answer and direct phone traffic. Prepare the museum for tours by deactivating alarms and unlocking doors and making other preparations to open and close facilities.
  • Manage gift shop sales and cash register, including opening and closing register, tracking sales records, reporting daily sales transactions and attendance, and preparing deposits. Manage the preparation of accounting reports.
  • Monitor gift shop inventory, including purchases, tracking, and reporting.
  • Manage reservations for events and programs; create registration and guest lists; and support set-up and take-down for events.
  • Manage facility rentals at the museum.
  • Provide strong service to potential rental clients, including providing walk-throughs, managing rental contracts and calendar, and collecting and tracking deposits and fees.
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and evaluate the work of guest services staff and volunteers, including offering ongoing training and updates.
  • Collaborate with director, educator, and other staff to support museum programs, exhibits, and other activities.
This position is advertised in line with the Governor’s executive order focused on skills-based hiring practices that focuses on the knowledge, skills, and abilities specific to the job and aligns the hiring process accordingly. Applicants must possess the following experience (note that part-time experience will be prorated):

  • Three (3) years of full-time professional experience in a museum setting with a primary focus on:
    1. Guest services and gift shop management.
    2. Supervision of volunteer programs.
    3. Public programming development related to history content.
  • At least two (2) of those years must include professional experience with a primary focus on the development of exhibitions for a museum.

Substitutions:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or college in History, Women’s/Gender Studies, Museum Studies, or another relevant field will count for 1 year of required experience.

Proven Experience, Knowledge, Skills: Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong background in history, with general knowledge of Colorado history.
  • A background in gender studies.
  • Experience in retail sales and customer service.
  • Experience in volunteer supervision.
  • Experience and confidence in editing multiple styles of writing.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • The ability to establish and manage multiple project schedules.
  • Basic research abilities.
  • An enthusiasm to explore ideas, amplify diverse voices, and help others discover what makes Colorado, Colorado.
  • Basic design skills with Adobe InDesign and Canva.
  • Relevant experience working for the State of Colorado.
