Job Description:
Position Summary
The CAD Operator is responsible for producing accurate and detailed CAD drawings to support the design and construction of power utility projects, including transmission and distribution lines, substations, underground duct banks, and related civil works.
This role works closely with engineers and designers to develop plan and profile drawings, single-line diagrams, layouts, and as-built documentation in accordance with utility standards, project requirements, and applicable codes.
Key Responsibilities
Drafting & Design Support
- Prepare and revise CAD drawings for:
- Overhead and underground transmission and distribution lines
- Substations (layouts, grounding, conduit, cable routing)
- Duct banks, manholes, vaults, and associated civil/site works
- Develop plan, profile, sections, details, and schematic drawings based on engineer/designer markups, sketches, and redlines.
- Create and maintain drawing templates, title blocks, standard details, and symbol libraries in line with company and client standards.
- Convert conceptual sketches and field notes into clear, buildable construction drawings.
Drawing Quality & Standards
- Ensure all drawings comply with:
- Client and utility CAD standards
- Company drafting procedures and naming conventions
- Applicable codes and standards as directed by engineers
- Perform self-checks of drawings for accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
- Support quality reviews by incorporating markups, comments, and revisions in a timely and accurate manner.
- Assist with maintaining standard drawing sets, typical details, and best-practice libraries for power utility projects.
Data Management & Documentation
- Organize and manage CAD files, ensuring correct version control, file naming, and storage within document management systems.
- Prepare and update drawing lists, indexes, and registers for submission packages.
- Produce and package drawing sets for design submittals, permit applications, construction issues, and as-built records.
- Assist in developing as-built drawings based on field redlines, survey information, and contractor input.
Coordination & Collaboration
- Coordinate with engineers, designers, project managers, and field staff to obtain necessary information and resolve drafting issues.
- Attend design coordination meetings and provide input on drafting impacts and drawing requirements.
- Collaborate with multi-discipline teams (civil, structural, electrical) to ensure drawings are well integrated and clash-free.
- Support interaction with external stakeholders (clients, utilities, contractors) regarding drawing formats and standards as directed.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certificate or diploma in drafting, CAD technology, engineering technology, or related discipline; equivalent experience may be considered.
- Minimum 6 years CAD drafting experience, with at least years in power utilities, electrical infrastructure, or related fields.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or equivalent CAD software used by the organization.
