This position functions as a Transportation Worker III in addition to work performed at all prior levels. This work is related to the maintenance, repair, and construction of State-owned fixed and moveable bridges, culverts, and pipes 54 inches and larger within Division 2. This work covers a wide variety of functional areas including: equipment operation; pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, draw bridge operation, contract inspection, repair of culverts, bridges, large pipes, bulkheads and pile clusters, sandblasting and painting, demolition work, welding, structure inspection, trenching and shoring, maintenance to ferry dock ramps, lead paint removal, steel fabrication, steel beam repairs, and other duties as assigned. This position is technical in nature and labor intensive. Employee will be required to work in diverse working environments, in all types of weather conditions, in and around heavy equipment, use power tools, and safely exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently. This position involves working in a close environment or independently, as needed. When inclement weather occurs, this position will be called upon to work nights and/or weekends to help in the snow and ice removal process. This position is currently located in the Lenoir County Bridge Maintenance Department which is responsible for Lenoir, Jones, and Greene Counties. This position may include working in other Bridge Departments within the Division.
Additional Expectations:
Must operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Employee will be expected to perform work safely while suspended at moderate heights, confined areas, over water, in water, in extreme heat and cold, and during inclement weather. Safety toe footwear is needed.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC06 / $35,596 - $62,294
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Experience serving as crew leader while performing bridge maintenance activities
- Experience in rigging loads for crane/lifting operations
- Experience in the maintenance and installation of erosion control devices
- Experience in Intermediate Work Zone Safety Traffic Control
- Experience constructing formwork using skilled carpentry techniques
Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
