Reports to: Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 Board of School Directors

Company Overview:

The Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 (AIU8) is one of the 29 intermediate units that provides a vast array of services for member school districts, including student services, training and technical assistance, online learning, and customized programs and services. IU8 includes four counties comprised of 35 school districts (approximately 98 schools) and five Career Technical Centers. Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 serves approximately 47,000 students across four counties within 3500 square miles. Our service area includes four counties: Blair, Somerset, Bedford, and Cambria. We have five different office locations within our service area: Altoona, Duncansville, Ebensburg, Richland, and Somerset.  AIU8 has opportunities for everyone and our service area offers a broad range of living environments from rural to more densely populated city areas. 

Job Summary:

To direct currently offered programs and to plan and develop future programs that will enable the Intermediate Unit to provide new services to school districts.  Must maintain positive relationship with school districts and provide optimal services to districts while remaining within the parameters of available resources.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Structure and staff the organization making it capable of meeting the goals of the IU.
  • Ensure the efficient and effective day-to-day operations of all programs and services of the Intermediate Unit through continual appraisal and managerial control.
  • Maintain favorable relationships with all of the various publics, especially those which have an impact on the destiny of the IU.
  • Ensure the continual effectiveness of the organization through the selection, training, development and motivation of the Intermediate Unit staff.
  • Stay personally appraised of all developments in the educational and legislative arena that affect the current and future operations of the IU.
  • Ensure the existence of imaginative planning to permit the IU to expand both in the quality and the quantity of its services.
  • Act as Chief Executive Officer of the IU Board and to assist the Board in fulfilling its statutory role.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with the Department of Education in order to maintain a current knowledge of the Department's program emphasis funding which might be available from governmental agencies or private foundations for use by the IU and local districts.
  • Elicit support from school districts by meeting with Superintendents and other local district staff members.
  • Coordinate and evaluate the performance and responsibilities of assigned personnel.
  • Demonstrate regular and timely attendance.
  • Maintain a structured work schedule to permit regularly scheduled meetings with various staff members. 

 

Requirements:

  • Maintenance of the letter of eligibility. A minimum of three years of successful experience in educational administration that can be documented by written recommendations from previous supervisors, as a superintendent, executive director, assistant superintendent, assistant executive director, or departmental director. Educationally, a Doctorate in education or present enrollment in an accredited Doctoral program with conferral of the degree expected within two years of appointment as Executive Director.
  • Must be able to interpret, analyze and problem solve. Must be able to converse, present and interact with individuals possessing diverse levels of education and abilities. Must be able to create, read and understand documents relating to federal, state and local mandates and monies as well as complex documents relating to education employment law.
  • Upon hire, all new employees must obtain a certificate of medical examination as well as a tuberculosis test as required under Chapter 14 of the Public School Code, 24 P.s. ��14-1416, 14-1418; 22 Pa Code �49.12(b) (regarding education); and 28 Pa Code �23.44 (regarding health and safety).
  • Current and acceptable clearances: Act 34 (PA State Police), Act 151 (PA Child Abuse History) Act 114 (PDE Fingerprinting), PDE6004 (Arrest & Conviction) and Act 168 (PA Sexual Misconduct background).

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • Normal office and presentation environment. Extensive travel within the IU area, State and country is required. Overnight stays are required for various journeys.
  • In the course of performing the duties and functions of Executive Director the holder of the position will be required to stand, walk, sit, squat/stoop, reach and lift items of varying weights.
