The School Health Physician for the School Health Program is a vital clinical role within the Montefiore Health System, dedicated to delivering comprehensive, high-quality primary care services directly within the communities we serve. Operating within school-based health centers, this position provides essential clinical assessments, evaluations, management, and treatment to a pediatric and adolescent patient population.
The successful candidate will ensure seamless compliance with all institutional standards, MSHP protocols, and national clinical best practice guidelines, while strictly adhering to Joint Commission standards as applied to school health centers. This role requires a standardized degree of clinical independence, exceptional collaboration with school personnel, a dedication to quality improvement initiatives, and a steadfast commitment to expanding community outreach and equitable healthcare access.
Responsibilities
- Direct Clinical Care: Provide comprehensive clinical primary care services, serving as a specialist in the assessment, evaluation, management, and treatment of pediatric and adolescent patients to meet quality and performance standards.
- Clinic Operations & Efficiency: Collaborate with site administration to assess and increase clinic efficiency and productivity, offering unique physician insights to optimize daily health center operations and process flow.
- Quality Improvement: Actively participate in program-wide Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives, providing monthly analyses of priority QI projects at the assigned site and supporting effective implementation.
- Service Access & Patient Outreach: Design and implement targeted service access activities to identify and engage students who need care, tracking and meeting set monthly benchmarks for increased patient access.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate seamlessly with multi-disciplinary clinical teams (Senior Clerks, LPNs, RNs, Psychologists, Social Workers, Dentists, and Optometrists) to ensure patients have comprehensive access to care.
- Stakeholder Relations: Proactively pursue and maintain communication with parents and guardians for appropriate clinical input and consent, while building strong collaborative relationships with school staff, teachers, and leadership.
- Emergency Response: Balance routine health center flow (scheduled appointments, walk-ins, and low-acuity care) with occasional requests from the school to respond to patient emergencies within the school building.
- Professional Engagement: Maintain weekly communication with supervisors regarding health center needs and site interventions, while attending required departmental meetings to support program building.
Requirements
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical program required.
- Successful completion of an accredited residency program in Pediatrics or Family Medicine.
- Valid, unrestricted New York State Medical License with up-to-date registration.
- Current, valid Federal DEA license.
- Clinical Expertise: Deep knowledge of best-practice, high-quality primary health care delivery tailored specifically to children and adolescents ages 3 to 20+.
- Specialized Competency: Demonstrated ability to provide counseling, prescriptions, and monitoring of reproductive health interventions in strict compliance with New York State laws and MSHP policies.
- System & Analytical Skills: Possess the organizational and analytical skills necessary to trouble shoot clinic processes, make actionable improvement recommendations, and maintain proficiency with clinical tracking and electronic health records.
- Standardized Judgment: Proven ability to function under standardized practices, exercising sound judgment with minimal daily instruction while collaborating effectively under the direction of the Medical Director.
- Physical & Environmental Requirements: Ability to perform light work, including sitting, standing, and walking dynamically within a school-based health center clinic environment. Must have the ability to lift or exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally.
