The role
Working as part of the Hiscox North Region, you will have the opportunity to influence the strategy of the book across underwriting, pricing, and proposition for Property Owners risks. Property Owners is a key specialism for Hiscox and we are looking for someone who is ready to seize the opportunity and make a stamp in the market for themselves and their career.
It is a competitive market – you will need to enjoy giving a great service and want to build great relationships with your brokers, so you really stand out to them. Equally, you will need to be skilful at analysing and understanding risk to ensure that we select the right clients, and that we underwrite our existing clients profitably for Hiscox.
What you’ll be doing:
As a Sector Underwriter for Property Owners’ business, you will be responsible for servicing and renewing a large book of existing Property Owners’ business within the region, as well as supporting the new business team with new business quotations, using your Property Owner’s underwriter specialism.
This means you will have responsibility for Hiscox’s regional Property Owners’ book, working with brokers to deliver excellent service, ensure strong underwriting performance, and supporting your colleagues to deliver profitable growth within the region. You will be visible and accessible to your brokers and will personally underwrite new and existing policies.
You will underwrite a range of Property Owners’ products within the Commercial Property Owners proposition including Buildings, Loss of Rent, Property Owners Liability, Engineering Breakdown, Terrorism and more to achieve regional business GWP targets
You’ll underwrite new and existing business with a focus on larger, more complex cases
Work with the broker facing DU team to support their panel of brokers to develop and execute annual business plans using a deep understanding of the brokers’ business to achieve growth targets
Identifying poorly performing risks and brokers and identify measures to improve their Property Owners portfolio business with Hiscox
Regularly visiting brokers’ offices across the region, where appropriate to your book of business, building a strong relationship with the individuals there and delivering a super service to them
Contributing to ensure the region passes Sales and Underwriting Audits
Our must-haves
Strong understanding of the Property Owners line of business and Hiscox appetite
Understanding of the underwriting lifecycle including policy wordings, pricing & claims
Understanding of pricing a risk and the factors that can affect pricing
Good knowledge of the insurance market, industry, competitors, Brokers and factors that can affect the market including soft/hard markets
Strong communication, relationship management and interpersonal skills
Strong commercial mindset with a focus on winning and retaining business
Confident in making sound, commercially balanced underwriting decisions
An appreciation and understanding of legal and regulatory guidelines
Ideally Diploma CII qualified or exempt through relevant experience as defined by the FCA

This role is classed as Hybrid working, which means that you can decide between working from home or your aligned home office, as required. However, the regional anchor (office) day is a Monday, when all colleagues are in the regional offices to support internal meetings and collaboration with each other as a team.
