LOCATION: Ottawa, Ontario
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Le Magazaen Operations Supervisor
Brief Overview:
The Le Magazaen Cultural Retail Associate supports the day‑to‑day operations of the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan’s cultural space, Le Magazaen. This part‑time role helps ensure the smooth functioning of three integrated areas: the Métis gift and art shop, the rotating cultural gallery, and the rentable boardroom/meeting space.
This is an on‑the‑floor, public‑facing position. The Cultural Retail Associate contributes to creating a welcoming, culturally grounded environment for visitors, artists, and community partners. The ideal candidate is friendly, organized, and passionate about Métis culture, customer service, and community engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
Retail & Gift Shop Support
- Provide warm, knowledgeable customer service to visitors and shoppers.
- Operate the point‑of‑sale system and process transactions accurately.
- Assist with merchandising, restocking, and maintaining clean, organized displays.
- Support inventory tasks such as receiving products, tagging items, and organizing stock.
Cultural Gallery Support
- Maintain the gallery space daily, ensuring displays are clean and visitor‑ready.
- Assist with exhibition changeovers, artist materials, and display setup.
- Support cultural programming such as workshops, artist talks, and events.
- Help with basic documentation and care of gallery items as directed.
Boardroom & Venue Assistance
- Prepare the boardroom before and after bookings, including furniture set-up and AV checks.
- Greet and support boardroom users during their visit.
- Maintain supplies and ensure the space is clean and professional.
General Operational Support
- Assist with opening and closing duties as scheduled.
- Respond to visitor inquiries in person, by phone, and by email.
- Support administrative tasks such as filing, record‑keeping, and basic reporting.
- Uphold Métis cultural protocols and contribute to a respectful, community‑centered environment.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Comfortable using point‑of‑sale systems and handling cash.
- Organized, reliable, and able to manage multiple tasks in a busy environment.
- Culturally respectful and professional with Métis citizens, artists, and visitors.
- Ability to speak Michif, Cree, or Dene is an asset but not required.
Qualifications:
- Experience in retail, hospitality, gallery, tourism, or other customer‑facing environments.
- Knowledge of Métis culture, history, and community priorities is a strong asset.
- Experience working with Indigenous organizations or artists is an advantage.
