* BLSHCP required effective 1/1/2021, existing incumbents with HSAED will be required to renew with BLSHCP all new hires effective this same date are required to have BLSHCP within 6 months of hire or transfer
The Laboratory Assistant performs support duties for efficient laboratory operations.
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or highest level of degree required. Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field strongly preferred for Histology and Cytology positions.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: ASCP/Phlebotomy certification or registry eligible preferred. Previous hospital phlebotomy experience may be substituted for certification. Incumbents working in a phlebotomist role must maintain 12 CEUs annually. BLSHCP required for the Laboratory Assistant I only in Phlebotomy effective 1/1/2021, existing incumbents with HSAED will be required to renew with BLSHCP all new hires effective this same date are required to have BLSHCP within 6 months of hire or transfer.

Must have the ability to distinguish colors.
Demonstrates the ability to perform the department specific competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.
Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and potential injury.
This position demands increased amounts of standing, bending and manual manipulation, as well as some light lifting.
The department specific Assessment and Evaluation Tool lists the essential functions of this position.
Core competencies will be assessed primarily to the following patient population(s) served (with the exception of newborns): All diagnoses/conditions of patients admitted to the hospital.

This position reports to the Laboratory Supervisor.
