Underwriting Manager, Construction and Energy
Job Description
The Underwriting Manager position is responsible for the profitable production and underwriting of Construction and Energy accounts from retail brokers across Canada
This person will also be the point person for all Contruction lines within Canada, working closely with each of the profit center heads to set strategy, and develop business plan for the region
This person will operate as the Canadian Team Lead and guide others in the production/retention of profitable Construction Property, Construction Casualty, Construction Professional/Pollution and Energy Property coverages
This position is key in driving the successful execution of the unit’s strategic plan, with particular emphasis on growth and excellent service standards
What you’ll be doing What will your essential responsibilities include
Coordinate/facilitate/lead new business, renewals, re-pricings, restrictions, special acceptances, commutations and cancellations in determining risk acceptability & coverage, in accordance with underwriting guidelines and authorities
Lead and grow the Construction and Energy underwriting team in Canada
Assist in generating Revenue and Expense budgets and maintain compliance with them
Possesses a depth of underwriting expertise in Construction and Energy will handle the more complex accounts, etc. and leverage that knowledge to lead and develop others
Foster communication and responsible for coordination with other areas that support our business—namely Claims, Risk Engineering, Actuarial, Underwriting Support, Financial Credit Control, Billing, Marketing and Compliance/ Regulatory
The position reports directly to the Chief Underwriting Officer (Large Commercial), Canada
What you’ll bring We’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills: A robust knowledge of the Canadian insurance industry, combined with in-depth technical knowledge of Construction and Energy insurance product offerings
Ability to lead a team that will deliver the most efficient and best possible customer experience
Proven business acumen to engage colleagues in how the needs of our customers are met through our vision, strategy, and operational plans
Demonstrated end-to-end strategy design including demonstrated development of business plans using data and analytics
Demonstrated ability to manage complex relationships diplomatically and consultatively and instill credence across all levels of the organization
Ability to build and drive positive, helpful, and seamless end-to-end customer, broker and/or partner experiences in the spirit of our purpose
Anticipate customer and market trends in order to position AXA XL as a responsible and innovative “market shaper” and Thought Leader in the industry
Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree
Professional Designations CIP, CRM, CPCU preferred
Extensive underwriting experience across the construction and energy industry preferably with exposure to large accounts
Robust insured and broker contacts
Robust negotiation and organizational skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

The Canada base salary range for this position is CAD 138,500 to 207,700
Actual pay will be determined based upon the individual’s skills, experience and location
