The PLC Machine Operator - is responsible for operating PLC‑controlled equipment used in the processing of steel and aluminum products. This includes grinding and polishing steel/aluminum sheets, plates, and billets, as well as Coil Processing including slitting, coil polish, coil buff, and cut‑to‑Length (CTL) operations.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Operate PLC‑controlled machinery using HMIs, push buttons, and established procedures.
- Perform grinding and polishing of steel and aluminum sheets, plates, and billets, and Coil Processing including slitting, coil polish, coil buff, and cut to length.
- Inspect materials using calipers, micrometers, tape measures, and ultrasonic measuring devices, etc.
- Handle materials using overhead cranes, gantry cranes, jib cranes, forklifts, sheet lifters, vacuum lifters, and plate handlers (experience a plus).
- Assist with skid building and packaging of finished materials.
- Maintain a clean, safe work area and follow all SMP/Ryerson safety requirements.
- Complete production and quality documentation accurately.

Requirements
- Successfully pass a skills-based assessment evaluating reading, math, inspection & measurement, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills
- Minimum 2 years of similar job experience preferred
- Regular attendance
- Basic math skills
- Basic computer skills and/or comfort using a computer
- Physical ability to pass physical requirements exam for vision, hearing, and mobility
- Successful candidates will be enrolled in a registered apprenticeship program as part of their onboarding and new hire training
